Optus launches prepaid 4G from $169

As Optus continues to roll out its nascent 4G network, the carrier now putting two prepaid deals onto the table in addition to contract-based plans.

Cheapest way into the 4G fast lane is a $169 USB Modem, which includes a generous serve of 6GB data valid for 60 days.

$199 gets you a Mini WiFi Modem (shown below) that converts the 4G or 3G signal into a private password-protected hotspot capable of feeding up to 10 devices at once.

The startup data allowance on this one is sensibly bumped up to 10GB, again valid for 60 days.

Recharge rates begin at 300MG for $10 with a 30 day use-by period, but we'd steer straight for the $50 top-up to get 4GB across 60 days – or plonk down $130 to be covered for 15GB for a whole year.

Buying these recharges online with your credit card scores you an extra 15% of data; you can also earn two Qantas Frequent Flyer points for every dollar spent on an Optus recharge.

Optus' 4G network currently has Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Newcastle and parts of Surfers Paradise and the Brisbane CBD under its wing, with Adelaide and Wollongong to come online sometime in 2013 – see optus.com.au/coverage for maps.

Of course, where there's no Optus 4G coverage you'll still be able to stay online via the telco's 3G network.
