Qantas is trialling a new My Card Offers platform in partnership with Mastercard, allowing Qantas Frequent Flyer members to scoop up bonus points on in-store purchases at participating retailers by ‘linking’ their Mastercard credit or debit card to their Qantas Frequent Flyer account.
Every week, Qantas will send a range of shopping offers to those who have enrolled – members simply activate the offers of interest to them, and use the Mastercard they’ve registered to make their qualifying purchase.
Mastercard communicates the details of that transaction to Qantas, and Qantas awards any bonus points owed directly to the member’s account, as opposed to bonus points being awarded by the credit card issuer.
That means you could be earning frequent flyer points when spending on any Australian-issued Mastercard credit card or Debit Mastercard, even one that doesn’t ordinarily provide any points!
If you do have a points-earning credit card, such as the Qantas Premier Mastercard, the bonus points you earn through My Card Offers come in addition to the points you’d normally earn on that transaction, meaning you can double-dip.
(As these points are also awarded directly by Qantas, they won’t count towards any points capping limits that may apply to your card, and your credit card provider isn’t involved in any way, other than by processing your purchase as with any other transaction.)
The offers you receive will become more relevant to your interests as you continue to shop on the Mastercard you’ve registered, even at places where there are no current ‘My Card Offers’.
For example, Qantas says that if a member has recently been spending with a female fashion retailer, they’ll begin to receive offers related to female fashion.
The program is currently open to 300,000 Frequent Flyer members on a trial basis, and will be opened to all members in April 2018.
To check if you’re one of the Chosen Ones, head to mycardoffers.qantasmall.com, and log in to your Frequent Flyer account. If eligible, you’ll be prompted to register your Mastercard by keying in your card details:
As part of the process, a US$0.50 pre-authorisation will be placed on your card – so if you’re using a Debit Mastercard, make sure there’s money in the attached account – but this will disappear from your account within a few days:
Then, just sit back and wait for the offers to roll in – such as 3,000 bonus Qantas Points when spending $250 or more in-store at David Jones by December 10 on your linked Mastercard, as some early participants have received:
Just remember that if your credit card details change, you’ll need to register your new card as well to make sure you don’t miss out on bonus points.
You can link multiple Mastercards to your Frequent Flyer account, but My Card Offers is not available with other card types, including Visa, American Express and Diners Club – this program is exclusively for Mastercard holders.
Don’t have a Mastercard? The Qantas Premier Mastercard is currently offering 75,000 bonus Qantas Points for eligible new cardholders, a reduced annual fee of $149 in the first year and an earn rate of up to one Qantas Point per dollar spent in Australia (in addition to any My Card Offers bonus points).
