Quick Topup Ideas - Qantas Points

By PG44 | Mar 07, 2019, 01:54 PM
Hi there,

I am looking to book a return QF flight to the US in Aug/Sep using Classic Flight Reward Business.

I am about 30K short - will have a 70K bonus coming from Premier Mastercard, but I assume that will take another month or two to come through.

Given that I know awards for QF flights to SF/LA can be pretty popular, I'm keen to secure the booking.

- Any ideas for the best quick topup methods, that dont involve buying points? preferably points that credit instantly, or within a week or so

I reviewed the latest guides for Alaska miles promotions, and it seems that purchasing a flight outright with Alaska points would cost US$1160, which is too much.

I have had a look at the Online mall with mastercard deals - the David Jones promotion has dropped down to 5 points per $ (down from 10 Points). I'd feel a bit weird trying to find $6000 worth of DJs items to buy (and then probably refund). Even $1000 worth of items! Im not a big shopper.
Current Qantas wine bonuses seem to be sitting at about 8000k - but on further review, the wines on offer don't look that flash.

Any ideas would be appreciated - the max # of points that i would ever earn in a month through credit card spend would be 10k-ish... so looking for some inspiration to get me over the line without throwing my cash away.

Plan B is one leg in QF premium economy... but hardly seems worth it.

Thanks

30,000 Qantas points is a lot to earn in a pinch, you might have to spread it over multiple sources. Qantas Wine does credit quickly whereas Online Mall will take a while.

As a last resort, you can buy a Qantas Top-up of 30,000 points for $884.

Unfortunately, I don't know any other quick-fixes that don't involve spending a lot of money or applying for a different credit card.

Maybe try pre-pay some bills in advance or buy a bunch of supermarket gift cards upfront, get some wine, and use Qantas Top-up for the remainder.

The fastest way, if possible, is get an 'eligible family member' to transfer (loan) you the points. These transfers happen instantly. Once you get the 70K from your Mastercard, give them their points back.

Not a lot of other ways to quickly get that many points short of purchasing them as mentioned above - then you have to work out if its worth it or just pay outright for the fare.

Sure, if you want your account suspended and potentially cancelled for breaching the QFF T&Cs! :P

Had the same dilemma. Qantas Wines has some good bonus points offers at the moment, managed to rack up 25,000 with two cases of wine at approx $400. If you are going to spend $$$ on points, may as well get a couple of cases of wine to boot. I think there are some bonus sign up points available too when you buy Qantas Wine membership. Points arrived about three days after i purchased.

Points from DJ’s can take up to 3 months to come through, and if you return the purchases the points are not credited.

For what its worth the 70k points sign up bonus from my qantas premier mastercard were credited in the same monthly statement as me hitting the minimum spend.

i would estimate that 99% of 'family' transfers contravene the rules anyway. If you did it once, you'd get away with it, as you step-god-cousins-nephew qualifies! I suspect that Qantas are in on the rort!

I'm interested what cases you bought to get 25,000 at $400. Care to share?
