Lounge Situation at SFO with QF

By JA | Jun 02, 2018, 01:59 PM
With the new QF flight to Melbourne starting later this year, has there been any update about the lounge situation for Qantas Business passengers travelling from San Francisco, or is everyone still directed to the Air France lounge?

There's no update as yet, I think. If you have very high frequent flyer status you may get into the CX lounge. I've been fortunate and been able to go in there both times I've tried.

BA is planning to expand their lounge. Maybe once that's done QF could consider using that instead (if BA is agreeable to that and doesn't want to charge too much) but I do wonder about that now that QF is going to be codesharing with Air France on some flights to France.

The Air France lounge in SFO is far below QF standards imo and it would be great if QF used a different lounge. I've been to both the CX Lounge and the Air France lounge and there's no comparison. The food is much better in the CX Lounge, there's great views of the tarmac and having a shower to freshen up before the flight is nice. Not to mention being in a lounge that's not crowded. In the CX lounge it only gets busy around when it's time to leave to go and board SFO to SYD (as the CX flight[s] depart later). Whereas in the Air France lounge it's packed.

I had the misfortune of trying to access one of the Lounges at SFO. Despite being a Platinum QFF and flying in business (cash ticket not a rewards ticket) I was declined entry to the CX Lounge (they said it was too full - but I could see past the person at the door and see plenty of spare seats) and the BA lounge was closed. I was allowed into the Air France Lounge and after weaving my way through the throng trying to find a seat, I gave up and went to a cafe/restaurant on the concourse.

My advice until a QF Lounge is opened is to try the CX Lounge or BA and if unsuccessful, go to the public concourse - the Air France box is horrid - hot, stuffy, overcrowded, lousy looking food and limited drinks.

I responded to a Qantas post-flight survey and indicated I wanted to speak to someone about the Lounge situation at SFO - that was in October 2016 and I am still waiting for the returned phone call.

I did receive a call about another aspect of the flight (one which I gave high praise for the staff handling of an abusive passenger) but the team member said he could not speak about the Longe and would get one of the International Lounge Team to call me - he checked my mobile number and asked what day(s) and time(s) were best to call .....

Qantas, please don't promise to call me and then not call - send me an email saying 'we know the lounge at SFO is not up to scratch and we are working on it' but please do not fail to live up to a promise that YOU made to return my call.

In theory yes, but CX are turning away QF pax that are not on their entry list for the lounge.

The JAL lounge is only open prior to JL1 departing in the afternoon (~2pm). It isn't available when QF74 is getting ready.
The CX lounge only has room for 100 pax with 2 flights (CX873 and CX851) departing shortly after QF74. Most of the 873 pax and early 851 pax will be at the lounge when QF pax would be trying to access. CX uses the capacity allowance to limit access.
They allow ~10 QF pax, and QF reportedly gives CX a list of people to allow in.
The BA lounge is used for IB6174 (1800), BA284 (1635) and BA286 (1935). Thus the BA lounge is closed when QF pax arrive.

The AF lounge in SFO sounds much like their lounges at ORD and JFK.
JAL uses the AF JFK lounge, RJ and QR use the AF ORD lounge.
At JFK T1, there isn't much other option. JL should move across to T8 with their trans pacific JV partner AA, but JL own part of T1... (JFK T1 is jointly owned by AF, JL, KE and LH)
When I flew out of ORD on RJ, I went to the BA lounge, only to be told they were about to close (with an hour left before the official close time) so had to use AF.
The next time I was there, flying QR, I went to the BA lounge and discussed things with the lounge staff. Lounge had just opened. No one else there. They tried to claim that I didn't have access, then after pointing out flying J on oneworld member and OWE status, they claimed lounge was full. They let me in once they worked out the QR flight left before most of the BA pax would arrive.

If "crap" is a nice word for the AF US lounges, I'd hate to think what their lounges in Paris are like.
