Status points optimising itineraries

Approaching the end of a cycle here in a few months and am close enough to want to take a stab at P1... only need 1800 pts to get to P1 and have three major internationals coming up, J class. I don't mind detours in J, any recommendations on crazy status point making itineraries that are possibly even a good bargain?

depends where your off to? - make sure they are QF flight numbers, on the connects, anything from central asia (Sing, or HK) to EMEA, I find rack up plenty

Think very carefully about P1. I was P1 with Qantas for 5 years and the difference from being Platinum was minimal. It was good when things went pear shaped but apart from that the difference in service etc was minimal.

It’s probably a controversial opinion around these parts, but I’m a big advocate of not doing any status runs / detours for the sake of retaining status.

To me, the question is simply this: is it worth giving up a meaningful portion of my time, on a plane journey I wouldn’t otherwise be on, for the sake of getting into a shinier lounge, or a slightly warmer smile from cabin crew? Invariably not in my view.

Of course, each person will run their own calculus and the answer will depend on your personal circumstances and temperament.

1800 is a lot to be short. You're only half-way.

It would make sense to consider it if you're within say about 1200 of it and anticipate that whilst your P1 you'll book a lot of classic reward seats and/or taking your chances with upgrades rather than booking J.

You could lock in P1 with a soft landing back to WP (so no need to chase SC the membership year after the year you get P1).

quite frankly, the only improvement I expect is being able to always pre-book aisle 4 on the 737 services... considering how often I have to use them. I'd be surprised if the smile was bigger (or if suddenly complementary upgrades surfaced when J seats are free...)

Even as a P1 it is possible to miss out on row 4 on the 737 especially if you tend to book at the last minute.

P1 has a number of benefits.

Some members with huge points balances use P1 to ask for classic reward seats in J/F on QF operated flights to be released and if they’re successful save heaps compared to booking a revenue flight.

FYI...T-80 hours rule works well to secure row 4/5 on B737 almost all the time! Even for a humble Bronze "frequent flyer". P1 for this reason alone is not worth it in my opinion.
