Qantas short-haul 737 business

Hi all,
I'm flying to noumea in July for a short break with Qantas in their 737 business - any idea what to expect?
Would I be pushing my expectations in hoping for an amenity kit?

My honest advice is that you temper your expectations as it's really not a big deal.

You will get a slightly wider seat with slightly more legroom than Y class. The meal and beverage service will be attentive and pleasant. You will absolutely not get an amenity kit.

My wife and I got amenity kits when we flew QF business to Christchurch last year on a 737. Is that just a JetConnect (ie Trans-Tasman) thing that Qantas doesn’t offer on other international 737 flights?

I think the amenity kits are only handed out on overnight flights. I regularly fly the AU-NZ routes and never received the kit on the daytime flights.

The main difference I notice compared to the domestic Qantas 737 Business class (east-coast) service is that on the NZ flights you also have a blanket and pillow provided. I don't think the NZ 737s have the new WiFi fitout though - at least not last time I flew on one. They have seatback entertainment screens, apart from the folks in row 1 where there is a fold out screen from the arm rest. The meal selections are also generally quite good on the NZ 737 services.

Nonsense Mark. The J class seat is significantly more comfortable (as it is on any domestic QF 738 service) than Y class. Definitely worth the extra for the haul to Noumea.

I agree, however, amenity kit is unlikely. Certainly don’t get them on JetConnnect for the most part to Kiwi, so can’t imagine you would for Noumea.

With respect, I never suggested the seat isn’t worthwhile, but rather, that it’s nothing to get excited about.

Based on the tone of the original post, the author seems to have old-fashioned, romantic views about business class travel (and air travel generally, I might add).

@MarkJohnSon, I don't see why you need to be so cynical, especially as I'm guessing I've never met you. Your assumption that I have 'old fashioned views' about business class travel or 'general travel' is most incorrect, I've travelled around the world in a variety of classes and have a pretty good idea as to what to expect mostly, but sometimes I'm wrong which is why I've decided to ask. I'd suggest you be a bit nicer to others and stop being so judgemental, it'll probably do you some good. Thanks

We fly both VA and QF domestically a lot in their respective 737s.

There is not much between them. Row 1 is slightly better on QF (but you can't select it that unless you are super-secret-double-platinum - even (stupidly) when the flight is empty) row 2 on VA is superior to row 2 on QF and vastly superior to QF's row 3.

Food wise - dinner is generally better on QF but all of the other meals tend to be better on VA.

Wine selection is much better on VA (2 of each colour) but QF's sole choice is always nice.

VA cabin staff are far superior at policing the 'bathroom at the front is for business class' rule. On most NZQF flights I have sat in row 1 and been surrounded by queues of people for the toilets - never on VA and only occasionally on QF-actual.

Both are effectively a nice international premium economy, not business in my opinion.
