New Updated Qantas Fare Categories

Qantas have introduced a couple of new Frequent Flyer Earn Categories

Discount Business: International 'I' class fares are classified as Discount Business.

Discount Premium Economy: For bookings from October 24, bookings in 'T' class will be classified as Discount Premium Economy

The earn tables also map Premium Economy fares for domestic flights (not sure that they did before)

Phew, seems like the new Discount Business aligns with the old Business fare bucket in terms of SC earn, the new Business category just earns slightly more. Was worried that it would be the same as Flexible Premium Economy or something.

There are two main effects of the change I can see:
1) The decreased earn if you are travelling in those classes
2) Rough;ly a 10% increase in the number of points required for an upgrade

I think a lot of people found it confusing that Premium Economy seats were classed as Flexible Economy for earn rate and for upgrades. Classifying the cheapest Premium Economy seats as Discount Premium Economy will be much easier for people to follow.

The points calculator is currently showing the Points/SC earn on the Premium Economy Sale and the Flexible Economy as the same for a flight SYD-LHR. So there appears to be no change to the earn rates there. Can't comment on the Business Side of things. Out of interest has anyone checked the other tiers for inflation/deflation?

We've analysed the changes and found some improvements to earning rates on fares marketed as Business Saver, and some reductions in the number of points requred for upgrades from Flexible Premium Economy to business class and from those same Business Saver fares to first class.
