36 hours in Munich - suggestions?

Hi all,

My fiancé and I have a brief stopover in Munich this June - arriving late Monday afternoon and flying out Wednesday morning. I am keen to hear suggestions on making the most of such a short visit. We will be staying near the central train station, and relying on public transport to get around.

Thanks!

If you like german food and beer I recommend the Augustiner brewery. It is a 5 -10 minute walk from central station. We went mid week for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is cheaper than the Hofbräuhaus and in our experience, admittedly in January, far less touristy too. The vibe was local business people having a post-work drink/meal with the odd tourist about, rather everyone in the place trying to take a selfie with a giant pretzel.

I'd do a visit to BMW, it's amazing, short taxi ride to there. Can be a few unsavory types around the front of the station, be streetwise and you will be OK.

The Victuals market in the centre of town is fantastic for a wander if you are a foodie. Amazing produce and food. Also found a great little jazz bar called Vogler not far from there. Enjoy, it's a great city.

My favourite (and my old local) is Burg Pappenheim, in Baader Str. Typical local beer hall with no tourists.

The Hofbrau am Platzl in the town centre is the tourist icon but skip it by all means. If you're in the city centre, the Augustiner in Kaufingerstr. is a far better option. But there are so many that you can't really go wrong. Unless you go to the Hofbrau am Platzl, that is...

Make sure you check out the surfers in the Englischer Garten. And throw yourself in if it's a warm day. You get carried way down the river and can get the tram back.

I would do the BMW factory tour. You need to book this ahead to get the tour in English. Easy train trip for just a couple euros. Adjacent is Olympic Platz - site of the Munich Olympics.

I went there a few years ago and had the best night. Amazing Bavarian food, fantastic music and of course the beer!

Buy a day ticket (easy to do from the machines - there's an English menu), then you can wander at your leisure on the tram, buses, underground, etc. And it's dead cheap.

Agree with the comment above about ‘the glockenspiel thing” at Marienplatz - but if you are fit and energetic, climb the tower of St Peter’s across from the Rathaus (town hall). Small fee and tight staircase, but 360 degree view from top is excellent. And if you are on top when the glockenspiel strikes, you can tick that box too 😀. If you like art and it’s a day for being inside, the collection of Kandinskys in the Blue Reiter exhibition at the Lenbachhaus is excellent. Skip the rest of the museum if time is short. Cafe there is good too but always busy.

I think the comments on the Hofbrauhaus are a little tough! I have been there many times and although filled with many tourists, the vibe is very upbeat and everyone has a smile and a great time. The food is great and the service staff are very friendly and efficient.
After all, there wouldn’t be an Oktoberfest if it wasn’t for Hofbrau Bier!

"After all, there wouldn’t be an Oktoberfest if it wasn’t for Hofbrau Bier!"

Ha, in as much as the Hofbrau tent confines the obnoxious backpackers who can't handle their beer, while everyone else can go an have a good time in one of the other tents?

Do a segway tour with City Segway Tours - Munich
You'll learn how to ride a segway (if you haven't done it before), see plenty of the city, be informed in the funniest possible way and have a lot of fun.
If you're lucky you'll get Tex as your guide!
