JAL Inquiries

Just a small one, 

I can't find much here, even in the review space, of the JAL products. 

I'm looking (currently in fantasy land, but with possibility of a turn into reality), at heading to Moscow via a few days in Japan, but with my child bearing hips, and being built like a rugby player, Economy can be a bit snug for me. 

I'd love people's insight

Haven't personally flown JAL, but if you're flying in Economy with their B787s you're in for a treat. 2-4-2 seating with 34 inch seat pitch (from what I've read, may vary depending on your seating location).

We've not reviewed JAL's latest business class as of yet, but we wouldn't be reviewing JAL economy anyway as we focus on the premium cabins. The good thing is that as mentioned above, JAL has the most spacious Boeing 787s in the sky, even in economy.

Hi David, Thanks for that. 

I'm very much hoping for at least their Prem. Econ. seats, if not their Business tickets. If I'm going to travel, I'll do it right. 

Very much looking forward to reading your opinions after the inaugural MEL-NRT!

I just flew business on JAL 787 from Narita to Bangkok. Here are my thoughts ...


ON ARRIVAL

Seat 3H, JAL 707, 787
Another Dreamliner
I'm headed to Bangkok.

On arrival thoughts
Lacking in personal storage and privacy while in seated position. I think privacy will be fine when lying flat. (It was)
Boarding and readiness very fast. Only started boarding 20 mins or so before scheduled take off.
No arrival drink.
Paperwork handed out early.

Amenities
  • Bottle of still water already at my seat on boarding.
  • Blanket and pillow
  • I can see one USB port
  • Slippers

Catering
  • Western and Japanese options. I had the Japanese, good, not amazing.

Seats
  • Configuration is 2-2-2, with what looks Iike lie flat beds. All face forward. Feels a little like the Qantas A-380 config, but is obviously newer.
  • The beds do lie flat, but at an angle, not quite horizontal
  • I'm in an aisle seat on the side, 3H
  • Plenty of overhead storage. Limited local storage.
  • No in seat massage function, but it does have a memory function. Buttons on armrest, again, similar to qantas a380.
  • Looks like a blanket and pillow are provided, no 'mattress'.
  • No pyjamas, but there is a cardigan. Bit weird, but I'll give it a try.

Entertainment
  • Lots of options
  • Over ear headphones, nothing special though. Think they're sony.

I'm also looking at travelling in premium economy on the MEL-NRT route next easter.  It appears that lounge access is provided.  QF J in SYD so i guess the same thing for MEL and the Sakura lounge at Narita which seems a bit ordinary but better than nothing.

JAL Economy = AA Main Cabin Extra or whatever its called. Which means it's spacious, comfortable and more legroom by economy standards.
Keep in mind that JAL Economy is more expensive than ANA Economy (I'm disappointed that ANA install 3-3-3 in 787-9 instead of 2-4-2 offered by JAL.)
