Cathay Pacific to fly Airbus A350 to Brisbane from March 2017

Cathay Pacific will begin flying its new Airbus A350 between Brisbane and Hong Kong from March 2017.

The advanced jet will slot into the daily CX156/157 service and feature the airline's latest generation of business class seats, which are a measured evolution of the current popular business class...

... with new and improved storage spaces, a sliding meal table and an 18.5-inch HD video screen with free satellite television channels (BBC World News, CNN and Euronews).

There's also all-new premium economy seating with a leg rest for each seat, a dedicated tablet holder and in-seat AC and USB power sockets.

You can also stay connected above the clouds with inflight Internet, at US$13 (A$17.40) to stay online for six hours of the eight hour flight – which is better value than the US$20 'full flight' pass.

That said, with CX156 departing Brisbane at just before 1am for a 7.35am touchdown into Hong Kong, you might just want to skip the surfing and get some sleep.

The Airbus A350 has some 12% more seats than the Airbus A330 it will replace, "enabling us to bring more passengers into Brisbane and take Queenslanders seamlessly to more than 170 destinations around the world" says Nelson Chin, Cathay Pacific's General Manager for the Southwest Pacific.

This will be Brisbane's first Airbus A350, and will follows Cathay's Australian A350 debut on the Melbourne-Hong Kong route from February 2017.

    Sydney is definitely on CX's A350 list, as are all other Aussie cities, because the airline will be phasing out its Airbus A330s in favour of the new birds... however, expect to still see some Boeing 777s on some flights in order to deliver yet more seats.

    For AU routes may be.  For CX network system-wide?  I seriously doubt it.  Reasons:

    1) CX fleet(excluding those leased to KA) today has 333 x37 while only 15 more 359s(7 already delivered) will be due for delivery to CX.  The numbers simply don't add up even if assuming CX is reducing its fleet size.
    2) On short sectors(i.e. below 4hrs) in which CX network has plenty, 359 offers tiny to no fuel burn advantage over 333 for CX even @ full payload.  Not surprising given that the 359 airframe structure is fundamentally optimized to support  extra-longhaul(i.e. 12-16hrs sectors) fuel load and thus much much heavier than the 333 airframe.  This is in addition to the fact that the capital cost of a brand new 359 is far higher than a 5-10yrs old 333 and CX has recently issued profit reduction warnings for the nex few yrs.
    3) 333 x26(70% of that fleet type) @ CX is below 10yrs old and the youngest 1 joined CX fleet only last yr.  Given CX fleet planning's long tradition of holding onto each airframe for @ least 20yrs, it's easy to predict 333 won't be phased out fm CX until 2030 @ the earliest.  In contrast, last 359 delivery to CX is scheduled to occur within 1.5yrs from now.

    I predict the replacement for @ least half of CX's 333 fleet will hv nothing to do with the 350 family.  It'll most likely be either the 339 or 78J.....new gen designs optimized for mission duration no more than 8-12hrs.

    1st, not everybody's comments...just some comments in which I hold an alternative/opposite view or understanding.  I wouldn't hv time to "pick" everybody's anyway.

    2ndly, I didn't know responding to comments with an alternative/opposite view or understanding, complete with  reasons/justifications, is prohibited on this website.

    Its good to see Cathay updating their product for the Brisbane market. I'll be flying back to Brisbane with Cathay in mid-April but it'll be on the via-Cairns service so I think that means I'll be stuck on an A330. Ahh well, I still congratulate CX on their Fleet Renewal.

    CX said they're going to progressively replace all of their A330s with A350s so I guess all ports here will get them eventually as they use a lot of A330s on Aus flights. Great to See MEL/BNE gets them first instead of SYD though.

    Cathay Pacific has two distinct flights to/from Brisbane. The flight gaining the A350 is the daily non-stop service between Brisbane and Hong Kong. The other flight instead runs four times per week via Cairns and retains the A330.

    Hi David,

    As someone who loves the current Cathay Pacific Service from Cairns to Hong Kong and the world, does this mean that the new A350 Brisbane route will cut us out, or will it be in addition to the excellent service we receive, please?

    Are U sure QF is truly not in the race with CX?

    QF isn't flogging ONLY 747 to HKG.  QF's 333 with J suites and a decent Y is every bit as good as the equivalents inside CX's 359 cabin by any objective measures.  In terms of PY, QF's current on 747 is again equivalent to CX's latest on 359....in fact, it is CX trying to catch up with QF in PY product due to the lack of a leg rest in every seat for CX's previous PY.
