Boingo unleashes high-speed airport WiFi

Airport WiFi can be a bit hit-and-miss, especially if you're unable to access a lounge before your flight. American company Boingo Wireless hopes to change that by serving up more Wi-Fi options in major American airports.

Boingo already offers free WiFi at selected airports with speeds that are faster than the conventional public networks, and is now introducing a paid tier with substantially faster speeds again.

The free service offers a 5Mbps downlink – although it's limited to 30-45 minutes per session and includes advertising – the premium connection is rated at 20Mbps with bursts of up to 50Mbps, so you can comfortably stream videos and music and work on extra-large files in the cloud.

Paid options range from US$7-$8 for a 24-hour pass for speeds above 10Mbps, but if you’re a frequent traveller to the States you should consider a monthly plan which starts at US$10 at speeds above 20Mbps.

If you’re still not convinced that it’s a good deal, there's another way to access the Boingo fast lane – as we've previously reported, if you have an American Express Platinum card issued in the USA you’ll receive complimentary access to the fastest tier of service available.

Boingo’s high-speed service is currently only available at the following US airports, with more to come throughout 2016.

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Boston – Logan International (BOS)
  • Chicago – Midway International (MDW)
  • Chicago – O’Hare International (ORD)
  • New York – John F. Kennedy International (JFK)
  • New York – LaGuardia International (LGA)
  • Newark Liberty International (EWR)

Boingo also won a contract earlier this year to provide airport WiFi at LAX, so expect speedier free and paid connections there in the not-too-distant future.
