Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and Swiss kick off joint venture

Australian business travellers bound for Europe could find their path lies a little smoother with the launch of a joint venture between Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa Group.

The agreement covers Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines end embraces flights between Singapore, Australia and Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium.

In addition to being able to book more destinations under a single ticket, the joint venture will also let corporate travellers apply their current corporate discount to destinations flown by the Lufthansa Group airlines.

Lufthansa and Swiss already count Australia as the largest market to which they don't actually fly, with Singapore serving as the primary Australian feed for both airlines.

Earlier this year Swiss launched its new Boeing 777-300ER onto daily flights between Singapore and Zurich, while Lufthansa will restart services between Singapore and Munich from March 2018.

The two airline groups have also significantly increased their codeshare ties, with over 130 city pairs now offered between key markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

It's also a natural tie-up for these Star Alliance siblings, with business class travellers and Gold-grade frequent flyers able to enjoy each airline's lounges, priority checkin and other premium perks.

Since this kicked off on October 1 I've noticed it's much easier to ticket First Class fares on lh.com connecting from SQ to LH (and onwards to Europe). Previously you would usually get pushed to Business Class on the SQ flight.

I’ve travelled on both and they are great, The Swiss around the world deal is a favorite of mine. I wish Virgin could tie in some way with Star Alliance.

Better hope that you have lounge access in FRA, its possibly the most extortionate airport i've ever been in. €16 for a glass of poor wine.

LH have one of the bet F class products in the market. The level of service is exceptional. Combined with SQ this is good news!

With SA having an ownership share of Virgin.
I hope this means we will finally be closer to using velocity to claim for Lufthansa flights.

Well that's exciting! LH operates the A346 out of MUC for long-haul routes, right? That'd be a welcome sight at SIN!

I'm flying BNE-SIN-ZRH (SQ W)-TXL (LX J) next year, though on separate tickets that were booked before this JV was announced. Good to know that my bags will definitely be tagged through to TXL, and I may even be able to get my LX boarding pass in BNE (that I'll change to LX stock in ZRH anyway!)

Does this partnership mean you can use the LH first lounge in FRA when flying F on SIA raher than the Senator lounge ?

Unfortunately no, LH/LX F lounges remain for their own customers and HON Circle members only on Star Alliance flights.

I wont ever use a 777 when there is an A380 or A350 available in F or any other class

If you don't want to fly the 77W (LX to ZRH or SQ to FRA) then your A380 options are SQ to ZRH and FRA or LH to FRA.

Those who hope for VA joining Star Alliance are likely to remain disappointed for a while yet. If VA and Virgin Atlantic are to join an alliance it will be Skyteam (due to Delta's control of VA) and it's unlikely one Virgin branded airline will join but not the other. VA's myriad of owners has made alliance membership difficult unfortunately.
