Revealed: where Qantas Frequent Flyers spend their points...

It's often said that Qantas Frequent Flyer points are Australia's de facto currency. And as the Red Roo's reward program approaches the 10 million member milestone, Qantas has revealed how all those points are being spent.

Travel remains the favourite way for Qantas points to be redeemed, with Fiji topping the list of international destinations based on statistics from January-June 2013.

(In addition to its more obvious appeal, the island is traditionally popular among frequent flyers for clocking up status credits on a business class Any Seat Award, especially when a double status credit deal is on offer.)

Auckland, Los Angeles, Johannesburg and Hawaii close out the top five list for an overseas points-based trip.

On the domestic front it's the predictable set of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, although redemption bookings to the recently reinstated Gold Coast route are also popular.

“Flights remain at the core of what people choose to spend their points on, but as the number of program partners grow we’re finding more and more people choosing non-flight options" said Lesley Grant, Qantas Frequent Flyer CEO.

The five most popular items chosen from the Qantas Store across January - June 2013 are:

  1. Gift cards, including department stores and iTunes gift cards
  2. Bose noise cancelling headsets and Apple's iPad mini (these ranked equal second)
  3. Go Pro digital camera
  4. De'Longhi Nespresso Pixie
  5. KitchenAid Artisan mixer (Empire Red proved the most popular colour among members)

Qantas' 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix package and its flight simulator experience topped the list of non-traditional' best sellers.
