Qantas to upgrade Auckland international business class lounge

Qantas to upgrade Auckland international business class lounge

Qantas will upgrade its Auckland airport lounge to what CEO Alan Joyce hopes will be "the best lounge in New Zealand" – even when measured against Air New Zealand's impressive flagship lounge.

The new Qantas Auckland Lounge lounge will follow in the footsteps of the airline's other stylish international lounges at SingaporeHong Kong and Los Angeles (below), and be available to Oneworld partners including American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines and LATAM.

Auckland is Qantas’ most popular international destination due to high trans-Tasman traffic, however the current lounge is generally regarded by travellers as among the worst in Qantas' international network.

But it'll be a matter of good things coming to those who wait, with the new lounge unlikely to open before the end of 2016 – and certainly not before American Airlines begins its daily Auckland-Los Angeles Boeing 787 service in June 2016.

"We have Auckland on the plan, it's a question of when we'll do it" Joyce told Australian Business Traveller during a press conference to announce the extension of the Qantas/American Airlines joint venture to Auckland-LAX.

"We'll be talking to (Auckland Airport) about how that's going to work to refurbish that lounge, and make that like the other (international) lounges."

"We'd like to have the best lounge in NZ, but these things take time," Joyce added.

I'll take a better overall combined lounge than the current FL. No real point in my opinion giving a broom closet to Emeralds and Platinums - maybe just give them some extra features or love and better use the entire space.

I'd have to agree with you I too think the FL's a goner. Shame cause I found it pleasant enough.

A suitable upgrade to a new CHC lounge would not go amiss either.

love all the 'about timers'.. and those who are actually complaining that the F/C lounge will disappear!! QF doesnt fly a F/C cabin to NZ, so why should they provide a F/C lounge??  ooops...it's not the actual F/C paying pax complaining...its the Plat FFers who think QF should have F/C Lounges at every airport that QF fly to!! LOL...Wouldn't it  be nice if every other airline had a F/C Lounge at every airport they flew to just to please their Plat or similar branded pax. LOL

As VA is the other 'major premium carrier'...what lounges do VA Plats get in AKL?? maybe we should ask other airlines to lift their offering instead of beating down QF to offer more!!

Considering VA Plats get access to a brand new Flagship air NZ lounge, I don't think they are very hard done by...

QF Plats can also access the EK lounge.

EXACTLY my point ...so why should QF spend the money on a QF FIRST lounge in AKL to 'please' these people

I feel that's an oversimplification. The 'complaining' doesn't generally stem from wanting more, but rather from seeing dedicated facilities being removed as being tantamount to a elimination of a tangible benefit.

I'm not saying that the BNE or AKL Emerald Lounges (As of course you're right, there's no longer F out of either of these ports) were much chop, but I don't feel that a bigger lounge with better amenities is an upgrade if Platinum’s and P1's are left without seats because a Qantas Club Member has set up camp with their partner and four kids in tow.

I don’t think the hope of an elevated experience for top-tier frequent flyers is petty, and I think that if a dedicated lounge isn’t possible or practical then there are other ways to recognise your most regular travellers, whether that’s in the form of something simple like a small cordoned off area within the lounge proper(such as the temporary F & OWE zone in the CX Pier J lounge during the Pier’s renovation last year) or even a special wine list kept behind the bar.  Little measures like this have a negligible cost, but still differentiate the product offering and provide motivation for loyalty.

add on...so how many airlines flying into OZ have BUILT A BRANDED FIRST/PLAT LOUNGE and  DONT OFFER FIRST CLASS ON THEIR A/C TO OZ?? all i'm pointing out is, why expect something of QF if you don't expect of others

I'm happy you've found your caps lock key. I feel the concept I suggested stands on it's own merits and furthers the discussion within the forum. I also don't feel that something has to have been done before in order to be worth considering; I believe that's known as innovation.

You clearly have your own views on this, which you're intent on ramming down the throats of others. I could replicate your attitude, though there's a well-known expression about arguing on the internet.

    undertheradar,

Reading your original response and your trolling follow up comments its clear you don't understand the situation re Auckland and Brisbane lounges - if you do please feel free to post a response that (a) parks the trolling, and (b) contributes to the discussion...

So... as has been reported here on Aus BT and commented to death by the ABT community - the Qantas lounges in AKL and BNE are long overdue for upgrades.

I've not seen any comments from QF Platinum flyers who have demanded a first class lounge. If anything, those commentators (including myself) have simply requested a facility upgrade so as to bring AKL and BNE inline with other high revenue Qantas ports such as Singapore, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong.

As it stands, both AKL and BNE lounges are sub standard - Qantas has in effect conceded this point and via Aus BT appears to be on record as to a committment to upgrade these lounges.

As David notes above - the plan is to align AKL with other second-tier ports - this is good, if not long overdue news.

I hope they have a look at the F&B (food and beverage) provision in the AKL lounge while they are at it. It's got quite stingy-looking and uninteresting lately...

This is wonderful news. As one of the my most frequented QF lounges (a must for escaping the socks and jandals brigade) I am very happy to read this.

I applaud AJ's ambition to make his new QF lounge the best one in NZ, but I personally think that the Emirates AKL lounge is so far ahead of the rest that he'll really have to work to do it.
