Qantas sweetens Platinum One frequent flyer status

Qantas sweetens Platinum One frequent flyer status

Qantas is revving up its Platinum One frequent flyer tier with new perks for the airline’s high flyers.

Beginning today the partners of all Platinum One members will automatically receive Platinum status in the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme, allowing them access to the airline’s domestic business lounges and international first class lounges along with a higher luggage allowance and a better chance of upgrades.

The gratis status will apply only to “a spouse or de facto domestic partner”, however, unlike the facility for Platinum frequent flyers who clock up 2,400 status credits to gift complimentary Gold membership to “any family member or friend”.

Now available: Partner Platinum

“This is something we heard a lot from Platinum One members” Stephanie Tully, Chief Marketing Officer for Qantas Loyalty.

“Platinum One members are flying the whole time and often their wife or husband flies out to meet them, because a holiday is often attached onto a Platinum One’s work trip” Tully explains, “so this allows the partner to enjoy the Qantas First lounge and other Platinum benefits when they travel on their own.”

Partner Platinum membership will be tied to the membership year of the Platinum One nominating them, so that if the Platinum One member drops back to Platinum status their partner would lose the gifted Platinum status and revert to their previous membership tier.

However, Tully tells Australian Business Traveller that “a number of people will get  extended partner membership because we don’t want somebody to have the new benefit for only a month.”

“If you’re due to downgrade from Platinum One within four weeks of today’s launch of partner Platinum, your partner will still get Platinum membership for 13 months”. The associated Platinum One member won’t see their own status retained, however, but will see the usual ‘soft landing’ to Platinum status.

There will be no changes to the number of status credits required to attain or retain Platinum One membership.

Bonus points plus extra perks

Qantas is also introducing new Platinum One bonus points levels, with 75,000 free points for members who earn 5,000 status credits in a membership year and a solid serve of 100,000 points once they click past 7,000 status credits.

In addition, Platinum One card-holders will be exempt from fare differences in ‘fly ahead’ situations where they move to an earlier domestic Qantas flight, as long as they’re travelling on a flexible fare.

Other newly-minted perks for your Platinum One plastic:

  • Earning double points through Qantas Restaurants
  • No fee when you book flights over the phone via the Qantas call centre
  • Free Premium membership to the new Qantas Golf Club, which the airline says will launch this summer

The Qantas Loyalty team embarks this week on a series of invitation-only roadshows, beginning with an event in Sydney this evening, to meet with frequent flyers and talk through recent developments in the scheme.

One popular topic of conversation is sure to be the move to fare-based calculation of frequent flyer points and status credits under the controversial ‘fairer flying’ scheme and the imminent reveal of revised points-earning rates for partner airlines such as Emirates, British Airways and Cathay Pacific.

Another will be the lure of Lifetime Platinum status, although Tully says “this is  not something we’re considering at the moment, it’s not on the radar.”
