Qantas steps into high-flying fashion with Bird & Knoll scarf

The latest innovation from Qantas isn't a new lounge, seat or meal service – it's an elegant scarf that's both fashion-forward and travel-friendly.

And it's certainly a first for the Flying Kangaroo, which worked with leading Australian scarf brand Bird & Knoll to create the limited-edition cashmere blend wrap, which its creators say "translates effortlessly from poolside sarong to an elegant inflight cover-up. so it’s ideal for popping in your hand luggage."

The design was 'inspired by' Aussie model Jessica Hart (below), who the airline signed up earlier this year as its first trend consultant and was tasked with choosing an Australian destination with a 'feels like home' connection.

The Sydney-born but Melbourne-bred Hart zoned in on Melbourne's funky Hosier Lane, with its streetscape art and popular cornerstone restaurant MoVida.

From there, Bird & Knoll went to work translating the bricks and mortar location into this colourful scarf, which is now on sale for $298 at qantasshop.com.au, Qantas' InSky Shopping and through Bird and Knoll stockists including David Jones and Husk.

It's certainly in keeping with Bird & Knoll's signature look of luxury scarves as a "canvas" for artistic photographic narratives of global destinations such as the Bondi Icebergs, the alleyways of Hong Kong and the streets of San Francisco.

"We take great pride in supporting Australian fashion designers, destinations and talent and we’re really excited about our collaboration with Bird & Knoll to bring extra style to the Qantas travel experience," said style-savvy Qantas group exec Olivia Wirth.

    Yes, definitely has a ‘paid advertising/advertorial’ scent to it. Also, Qantas is now selling $298 scarves!? Branching into a lot of new areas.

    I don't really mind that this is covered - sure it's not relevant to many but may be of interest to some. This scarf did, however, make an impact in the domestic J lounge in Sydney this morning as Qantas roped off a big chunk of the lounge for the launch, much to the chagrin of members and their guests. I'm all for Qantas raising revenue through advertising, though it seems self-defeating if the method of advertising inconveniences your target audience.
