Qantas releases new iPhone travel app, says Android app is on the way

Fly with Qantas? Got an iPhone? Then your next logical step is grab the Red Roo's new iPhone app, which is now live on Apple's iTunes Store.

The free app is a far more versatile travel tool compared to the very limited Qantas Frequent Flyer app.

Even more pleasing is that Qantas is working on an Android edition of this app. A Qantas spokeswoman confirmed to Australian Business Traveller today that "an Android version will be released later this year".

Fare alerts, flight status and Passbook support

So what has Qantas rolled into this shiny piece of digital candy?

There's the usual search-and-book service, of course.

But travellers can create a watchlist for specific destinations and receive an alert when there's a sale or special offer, or even whenever a specific fare falls below your preferred price.

(So to that extent it basically apes the Virgin Australia iPhone app).

There's also the mandatory mobile check-in for most domestic flights, with boarding passes (colour-coded to match your Qantas Frequent Flyer status) automatically added to Apple's Passbook app.

You'll also get live updates on flight status, in case a delay means you can spend a bit more time in the lounge.

Members of the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme can check their current tally of points.

It's about time. Just had a play around with it. Excellent App, worth the wait.

Have had a play of this new app today. Seems to be a nicer interface version of the older Qantas app (which was for some reason called "Qantas 2"). The features and pages are similar, except for the addition of sale fare alerts. The only annoying feature is it keeps asking to "Verify Details" with Name and PIN over and over for bookings and checkin even after logging into your account.

Unbelievable that given modern app dev technologies available today that the Android app is only going to be available "later" in the year.

All the other One World members seem to have been able to create an Android app alongside their iPhone apps, yet the Qantas developers seem to be unable to?

    Astonishing

Come on, Qantas, how can you be so late to the game with an Android app? Yes we know Apple is 'cool' but more people have Android phones now, surely the people you hired to build this app would be equally capable of compiling it for Android. Any decent app development house these days is multi-platform. There's really no excuse not to have launched an Android app at the same time as this new iPhone one.

There is a glitch with the App which seems to be affecting a few people.  Whenever it requires you to Verify Details when you go into options like "My Bookings".  You enter your Surname and Pin, and verify, but an error keeps popping up saying "Login Failed.  The details entered do not match our records.  Check your details and re-enter your PIN".

David, do you know where we can report this fault to Qantas?

I had the same problem. Since I have logged off the app, it wont even allow me to sign back in with my QFF details.  Needs a bit more work I think.

BNE0077 - If you delete the App, and re-install it again, it will let you log into the main part again.  I just don't log off it now.  I've msged qantas to let them know of the issue, but haven't gotten any reply back from them yet.
