Qantas Boeing 787 Brisbane-Los Angeles, New York flights start Sept

Qantas will begin daily Boeing 787-9 flights between Brisbane and Los Angeles, and then from LAX to New York, from September 1, with tickets on sale today.

After a two hour layover at Los Angeles the Dreamliner will continue to New York as the cross-country QF11/QF12 shuttle, having also picked up passengers from Qantas' Sydney-LA and Melbourne-LA services.

As you'd expect, the best place to be on that Boeing 787 will be in business class – see our review here – although we can't recommend Qantas' all-new premium economy seat (reviewed here) given the lack of legroom and complicated footrest mechanism.

The Dreamliner will take over the route from one of Qantas' few remaining Boeing 747 jets as the ageing and fuel-thirsty jumbos are progressively put out to pasture.

Until December 2018, the daily Brisbane – Los Angeles Dreamliner will be complemented by “up to three weekly Boeing 747 flights to meet seasonal demand,” Qantas says.

Once Qantas’ eighth Dreamliner has been delivered by the end of 2018, those jumbo jets will be replaced by a second year-round Dreamliner service running four times a week – specifically Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday out of Brisbane.

The Brisbane-LA service is the fourth international route for the airline's new Boeing 787-9 fleet, following Melbourne-Los Angeles, Melbourne-San Francisco and Perth-London, and is the first route earmarked for the four Boeing 787s which will be based in Brisbane following their delivery between July and November 2018.

    So the 8th 787 will operate BNE-LAX four times a week (on top of the other daily LAX service) - so what does it do for the rest of the time? It can't do another US destination on the other three days. Or is the plan for the 8th aircraft to fly BNE-LAX-ORD, 4 times per week?

    John - were you posing a question when you said "It can't do another US destination on the other three days."? I would think that this is what they will do, similar to the recent MEL-LAX, MEL-SFO split. ORD has been floated as you suggest. Looking at the timings of the 4 daily extras, not sure the arrival into LAX around midday and the departure from LAX around 9pm allows time for a tag flight.

    The issue is that it takes more than 24 hours to do a return flight from Australia to the US. (13 hours over, 3 hours on the ground, 14 hours back - 30 hour rotation minimum). So if the 8th Dreamliner is doing BNE-LAX four days per week, it can't do three other flights per week to another US city. The only way another US destination would fit would be as a tag flight.

    There are four Brisbane based 787s. Two are used for the daily BNE-LAX-JFK return and another to do the 4 times weekly BNE-LAX. The 8th 787 can run an additional 3 flights a week from Brisbane of up to 48 hours return in duration (i.e. taking 6 days in total).

    I flew Premium Economy on the Dreamliner last week and had seat 20K which is the bulkhead seat by the window. They provided an Ottoman as a leg rest and I slept 7 - 8 hours on each flight and the service was excellent.

    What I found interesting was the lack of jetlag from both flights, I really do think the Dreamliner's technology helps, this is 4th time I've flown this aircraft type and have consistently faired better in the jetlag department.

    From my experience thus far I recommend the product, however next time I might try a non bulkhead seat and see if I get the same sleep.

    If I could have the bulkhead seat every time, Dreamliner all the way. Like I said tho I would be interested in trying row 21-23 with the leg rest option.
    Business class is a no brainer for the Dreamliner however. And even when the new seats make there way to the A380 I think Dreamliner might be better.

    Hi SteveCF, I just flew LAX-MEL in 21J and I feel the criticism has been overly harsh on the 787 PE seats. I didn't have a problem with seat pitch and whilst the foot net isn't perfect it at least gives a secondary option for the placement of your feet. Compared to CX PE on a variety of their planes I felt the QF seat was far superior in comfort and amenity, not to mention QF's superior soft product. I slept for about 7 hours and have no jet lag which is all you can really ask for on a transpacific flight.
    Like you said this is just an opinion, but I think once customers try the product they will have a different perspective than that of statistics.

    Has Qantas ever replied to the critique of their new PE seats? I Iiked PE on the 747 best of all but then I preferred everything about the 747, though the J seats could be difficult to operate, ditto on the 330.

    G'day SteveCF...if you like travelling on the 787, you'll like even more travelling on an A350...a little bit wider and slightly more seat room and head room, and a little smoother...just a little better everywhere in the creature comfort department. Happy travelling!!

    Phelan Qantas by mid year will have eliminated 50% plus business class seats to the US with a380 and 747 downgrades in recent years and elimination of the 2nd 747 service out of SYD.787,s keep in the air that's your answer.

    It's likely that as QF gets more 787 over coming years it will open up new routes to US destinations leading to more QF J seats to the US overall not less.

    QF will be hoping that by choosing their routes carefully that they'll have to cancel less services due to insufficient demand and that the convenience of direct flights will lead to many passengers flying QF who otherwise would not have.

    Delta also does this with DL40/41 for the prestige of saying they fly JFK-SYD when the reality is JFK- LAX is a 757/767 and then the LAX-SYD flight is a 772

    Interestingly, when QF first announced its return to JFK some years back, it originally indicated the LAX-JFK tag flights would carry the QF 15 and 16 flight numbers. Then closer to the actual date, it changed the numbers to 11 and 12.

    John it used to be QF107/108 SYD-LAX-JFK using same B747-400 aircraft right through, but when they cancelled the 107/108 for good they came up with this QF11 concept that changes aircraft in LAX from A380 to the B744 (ex BNE).

    Correct, but when the 107/108 JFK service was dropped, QF announced the new arrangement would be numbered QF15/16. It appeared in the GDS that way, and I actually booked a ticket on QF15 LAX-JFK. Some weeks after booking, I received a notification that the flight had "changed" to QF11.

    This could be handy if QF12 is delayed out of JFK on a day where QF96 is scheduled. QF16 could take the 787 headed for MEL and then take off as soon as the pax have transferred from QF12. The delayed JFK 787 could then be cleaned and serviced to operate QF96 which is scheduled to depart later anyway

    Flew back on the QF96 arriving Tuesday. It was the first flight using biofuel for QF from the states to Aust. Aside from a couple of announcements it was all very low key.

    Disagree with your comments on premium economy. I've flown it Lax-Syd and found legroom adequate and the leg rest okay once I got the hang of it. The touch screen IFE is excellent, the seat comfortable and the service good. I flew economy up and found its increased legroom over the A380 and 747 excellent, ditto the IFE and service. The smaller economy cabin size made it feel much less like cattle class too, while the bathrooms in both classes seem larger. All-round I was impressed and will choose it out of MEL or BNE to LAX despite my Sydney origin.

    We've known about QF15/11/12/16 BNE-LAX-JFK going to 787 for a while, Qantas said as much when they announced the second set being based in BNE.

    This mention of a 2nd 4 weekly BNE-LAX is confusing. It doesn't match with anything Qantas had been suggesting (ie, BNE-SEA, ORD or DFW).

    The currently expected delivery dates for the remaining firm orders are:
    ZND 26 Feb
    ZNE 12 Jul
    ZNF 24 Aug
    ZNG 13 Nov
    ZNH 26 Nov

    This also means that by this time next year, Qantas will only have the 6 747-400ERs remaining in service out of the once 30 strong 747 fleet.

    Will pass on this one, and schedule my flights on the double up days or dog leg it via Sydney on the 747's and A380's. QF's Dreamliner is and will be a white elephant when it comes to long distance legs. The 747 or A380 is the aircraft designed for Trans Pacific and virtually all flights 12+ hours with their better equipped premium cabins and general space for Y passenger loads.

    Qantas how about you keep the 789 for Asian routes and let the legacy aircraft provide the comfort that passengers are looking for.

    It's certainly not true to say that the A380's Business cabin is "better equipped" than the 787. The Dreamliner J suite is way superior to the old Skybeds. I've recently done QF95 MEL-LAX in the 787 and it was great.

    All the Qantas Group 787s have been/will be built at Paine Field in Everett WA. There are reports that Qantas refused to accept any aircraft built at Charleston, however, all 787-10s will be built at Charleston. -8 and -9's are built at both Charleston and Everett.

    I did BNE to EWR on a 787-8 recently with Air Canada. Next week I did SQ's A350 then CX's A350.
    Not a fan of the 787 now. Can't see that the experience matches the hype that Boeing have managed to instil into everyone.
    Both A350s were so much quieter. Didn't think there'd be much in it but there is.

    Hey Russjking...I've had the same experience. The flying public will surely choose A350 over B787 when they can. It's in a completely different class regarding creature comfort. And I've gone further too...I took my calibrated sound pressure measuring device on a number of flights, just for the hell of it. The result is Airbus A320, 330, 350, 380 aircraft are all more quiet than Boeing 737, 767, 777, 787, 747. All measurements were taken in the centre of the aeroplane at the leading edge of the wing, downstairs in the case of the A380. Noisiest by far are the B737 and B777.

    re: comment above on QF US changes overall, has anyone heard of possible changes for SYD-DFW? Just tried to book a ticket for later 2018 and was told 'won't be operating that day' with no further information available. Could be a plausible explanation, but I couldn't help but wonder if the Roo is going to downgrade DFW from a daily service to something less?

    I am so pleased for Qantas they have so many dwarfs & midgets as customers who can obviously feel comfortable in PE in 787-9. As a non over-over weight 6'6" traveller I find this PE the most uncomfortable section on this aircraft. As the forward passenger reclines, & one tries to adjust to the "improved" footrest the seat becomes a true nightmare rather than a "dream" experience. Also being dumped in Perth to fly domestic onwards to BNE or SYD is a positive backward step. Let all our short people enjoy their flight but for me the pleasure remains on A380/B747.

    I also think the PE on the 787 has been underrated. It is not Business class and that's what is obviously preferable. However the Front row of PE is pretty good, with the current Otoman provided as foot rest, nice service , use of Business toilet and snackbar , priority entry. After a month of flying awful North American Airlines it was very welcome.

    ...lol..yes, you're right...I referred to service when I should have been talking about the aircraft comfort. I've done quite a few flights on Cathay Pacific A350, and commonly also use QF 787. In correcting myself, I should have compared just aircraft, not service. (I think in my head I grouped the whole lot together)...
