Qantas and KLM partner for flights to Amsterdam

Qantas and KLM partner for flights to Amsterdam

Qantas and KLM are partnering on flights to Amsterdam, with Singapore acting as the common hub for a codeshare alliance beginning November 2018.

Similar in scope to the Qantas/Air France liaison, the newly-minted agreement will see Qantas carry travellers through to Singapore where they'll transfer to KLM's daily flight to the Dutch capital – with the option to book that flight under a QF flight number for a full serve of Qantas points and status credits.

Eligible Qantas travellers – including business class passengers and Platinum and Gold-grade frequent flyers – will also have access to the KLM Lounge in Amsterdam.

A 12.40am departure from Singapore on KLM's KL836 will provide plenty of time to relax in the Qantas Singapore Lounge, with the 7.35am touchdown at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport putting the whole day ahead of you, along with connections through to the rest of Europe on KLM's network.

The KL835 return leg is wheels up at 9.10pm to reach Singapore at 3.25pm.

KLM flies a Boeing 777-300ER between Singapore and Amsterdam, with 34 lie-flat seats in business class arranged in a 2-2-2- layout.

The seats – based on the original B/E Aerospace Diamond platform – and the cabin take their colour cues from KLM's hallmark blue.

Qantas says that both airlines "are also exploring redemption opportunities on codeshare flights" which could allow Qantas points to be used to book a seat or snare an upgrade from economy to business class.

Is it just me or is Qantas's new approach to sign codeshare deals with every European airline (Finnair, Air France and now KLM).

It's a sign that the Emirates deal might not last much longer or at the very least that Qantas has got a new approach to delivering traffic to Europe and it's not via Dubai.

I would assume that QF make more money on a ticket by sending via Asia like this as they are getting part of the carriage on their metal. Unlike the codeshare via Dubai where it is EK metal the whole journey.

But then why have a mega code share deal and strategic partnership with EK? Surely that’s the priority, or your own aircraft to London.

Or it recognises that manyz particularly leisure travellers like a stopover, and Singapore may be more appealing than Dubai.

I don't see how giving passengers more options can be a bad thing.. Dubai will still provide the most route options by a long way

Does this replace the EK codeshare to AMS via DXB or is this in addition to the EK JV? I fly to AMS a couple of times a year for work using the EK/QF codeshare and will probably continue to do so as the EK arrangement allows arrival and departure from multiple European ports rather than just AMS.

I’ll stick to EK if I were you. I like KL’s offering on the 789 but I hated the 77W 2-2-2 config

Do note KLM and Air France are the same company so it makes sense to code share with both

Honestly and truly why would you go with KL or even AF when you have the QF/EK codeshare mega mix of A380s and multiple flights. Unless you specifically have a meeting in SG then up to AMS I guess it works...but as an option to Europe, weird.

Price, avoiding Dubai and actually flying on a QF plane are three reasons!

Yeah I get it, I guess I just never think of AF or KL or any Skyteam airlines, it just seems so far removed from QF or any of the usual suspect partners in oneworld or EK.

I still much prefer connecting through SIN and having the option of breaking my trip with a 1-2 day stopover in a city that is much more interesting. I also love flying into a city on their national carrier, the flight there serves as a bit of a taste of what's to come.

If the price of the Qantas and Air France agreement is to go by I don’t think price is the key.

I kinda suspect these agreements are more for trips starting on Air France or KLM connecting to Australia rather than us Aussies to France/Netherlands and beyond.

I don’t know that I entirely agree with you about AF. Having flown out of both SFO and SEA (where I’m based) in their refurbed 772 and 77W, I was most impressed. 1-2-1 config. I’m told their 789 is that way too. The only bad AF configs are the A330 and A380. Service, wine and dessert were top notch, service very warm (yes!).

Ive flown with KLM a few times and, whilst they’ll never have the fancy factor of QR or the polish of SQ, they’re reliable, efficient and safe. Dutch efficiency definitely shines through but I’ve never had a bad flight with them. Bonus points for the lovely Delft gin houses! I would fly this combo over QF/EK purely to avoid DXB!

SQ polished? Machine like yeah, but when things don't go to plan the polish turns to custard rather quickly.

Never had the pleasure of KLM, or Air France (except short haul/domestic).

I rectify flew to Amsterdam and ended flying with SQ as the only options with QF were through Heathrow and onwards with BA. I was told that Amsterdam was not avalible as part of the EK deal with QF.

As someone who flew to AMS last week I can assure you that both EK147 and EK149 are available as QF codeshare (QF8147/8149 respectively).

Amsterdam is an excellent European port. It would be great if QF51 from BNE to SIN was rescheduled to better connect with this flight (and QF1 to LHR). Almost 7 hour connection is too long.

Or even better still would be to have a departure around 9am and 4pm. There was a rumour 12 months ago of a second daily from BNE, but obviously nothing eventuated.

I like the idea, as that way I get to fly QF metal, rather than Emirates.. Look forward to the day when Qantas fly all the way to AMS, maybe even direct from PER.

these so-called alliances are becoming less important, just get rid of them and maintain JVs that could link on an RTW. Seriously, what's the point a lot of the time. I'd rather stick on QF all the way to LHR and then connect on BA for an hour. If the alliance is there why not reinstate so many of the code shares that used to happen and not be frenemies?

Bring it on! Right now I would have to go to Amsterdam via Heathrow, so a visit to an elderly sister will be so much easier, and achieve some status points as well. Project Sunrise could very well be extended. Well done Alan!

Plenty of anti DXB bias but I'm in the minority who prefers that over SIN. Try getting into and out of the SIN lounge on QF1/2 given where the aircraft often parks ie a long way off. Other than that schipol is an effecient airport to transit and avoids the mess that LHR often is

One may get a better deal from qantas club at least in Singapore. This trip to Europe via Singapore on Emirates ,the Qantas Club is closed in the morning and connections in Dubai too tight both ways to access the club and nothing at Ams.

The whole general QF/EK experience is far superior. Service, food, proper lounges, A380 aircraft availability, efficient connections and network (did I say network?), all while earning full QF points and SC's. While AF and KL are great carriers, not sure I comprehend the thumbs up for a more boring bland choice to EU?

Also, totally agree with the question above...why isn't QF doing all this with CX, MH, JL, UL as oneworld partners and all via Asia too?
