New American Express customers can also take home 30,000 bonus Qantas Points: almost enough for a return business class reward journey between Sydney and Melbourne.

Earning points for free flights: 4/5

New cardholders can earn 30,000 bonus Qantas Points when applying, being approved and spending $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months.

That's in addition to earning 1.25 Qantas Points per dollar on your everyday spend, including with insurance companies and utility providers where you'd previously earn fewer points. Government transactions continue to earn 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar, however.

Complimentary Qantas epiQure Premium membership also means you can earn extra points when buying wine directly from Qantas epiQure, being three Qantas Points per dollar spent as opposed to one Qantas Point per dollar spent for non-Premium members, in addition to the points earned via AMEX for spending on your credit card.

Airport lounge access: 2/5

As part of the package, you'll receive two complimentary Qantas Club invitations each year after your first card spend on selected Qantas products and services (such as using your card to book a Qantas flight) – valid in any domestic Qantas Club lounge or international Qantas business class lounge, except in Los Angeles.

Access to the American Express Sydney Airport lounge isn't included with this card and can't be bought, but is enjoyed by holders of the higher-tier Qantas American Express Ultimate Card.

Free international travel insurance: 4.5/5

Use your Qantas American Express Premium card to pay for your flights and AMEX's free domestic and international travel insurance has you covered on trips of up to 62 days, up to a maximum of 120 total travel days per year.

That's a noticeable step above most other credit cards which only provide travel insurance on international jaunts and a subset of coverage on domestic itineraries.

Qantas American Express Premium card: our verdict

The revamped Qantas American Express Premium card offers a higher-than-average earn rate, and with its sign-up bonus, this is a very attractive card to pair with a Visa or Mastercard for those times where American Express isn't accepted.

There's also no limit to the number of points you can earn, so you're free to spend as much as you can afford to repay (within your assigned credit limit) and can earn points on the lot at full rates – and when mixed with the neat 30,000-point welcome bonus, you'll be well on your way to your next free flight or upgrade.
