Qantas adds extra daily A380 superjumbo to Sydney-Hong Kong

Qantas is upgrading flights between Sydney and Hong Kong from this week with an Airbus A380 replacing the older Boeing 747 on the Monday service between the two cities.

Travellers will now be able to enjoy the airline's flagship superjumbo on the daily QF127/128 service from Thursdays to Mondays inclusive, with the Boeing 747 reduced to only the Tuesday and Wednesday flights.

And things will get even better next year, as Australian Business Traveller reported last month, with the daily Sydney-Hong Kong flight running an A380 every day from Thursday January 2 through to Monday March 3, 2014.

From March 4, the schedule will revert to an A380 from Thursday to Monday and the Boeing 747 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also in March next year, Qantas will open its new lounge at Hong Kong International Airport.

The Qantas Hong Kong Lounge will be a single-class lounge for all business class and first class passengers (along with Qantas Gold and Platinum-grade frequent flyers and their oneworld card-holding equivalents), modelled along the same lines as with the Qantas Singapore Lounge.

Great news for me. I do a lot of HKG runs and dread being on the old 744's.

What is allowing this temporary schedule change given there are no A380s being added to the fleet? Is another route being downgraded or is this possible due a change in maintenance schedule?

Er, the A380 is already used four times weekly (S - - - TFS). On the days the 744 runs, the A380 just isn't being used. Such a service can already be run. It just isn't.

Well, not exactly. Qantas' A380's have been in maitenance in Manila getting the wing rib's fixed up. They are now all done, and Qantas is deploying the extra capcity of the Summer on SYD-HKG and SYD-LAX.
