No first class for Lufthansa Boeing 777-9 jets

Lufthansa is thinking big with business class for its new Boeing 777-9s, but something the new jets won't have will be first class seats.

While the final layout of Lufthansa’s 34 ordered 777-9s hasn’t been decided, the carrier says they’ll accommodate 45 to 60 business passengers, but feature no first class cabin.

Lufthansa will offer business class seats that stretch to 7 feet (2.2 meters), aiming to boost the corporate appeal of a carrier that has only recently embraced flat-bed berths.

Passengers will be able to choose between six different setups in the business cabin, including a paired layout, an enhanced-privacy variant and one that offers slightly less snooze room while featuring more storage and work space. All but the extra-long berth will measure a standard 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 metres).

All of the seats will also have direct aisle access, overcoming the need for some premium passengers to clamber past others – a requirement many airlines have already eradicated.

Lufthansa came late to the flat-bed revolution, rolling the seats out in business class only in 2013, more than a decade after pioneer British Airways.

The multi-option business berth set to debut on the new 777-9 fleet from 2020 should help the carrier enhance its credentials as an innovator as it seeks to become the first in Europe awarded five stars by the Skytrax ratings service.

    why anyone would fly a 777 on long haul is beyond me...worst experience of all amoungst modern day jets.

    Without F, no one will miss much. 2 weeks ago I was on LH flight in F IAD-FRA, seat 1A. At the door, “1A, your seat is over there” he pointed. From then on I had to ask for everything. No offer to take my jacket. Seat 1A has no storage, so I had to ask. Apparently some VIPs in F who got constant attention and constant refills. Food was pretty horrible as well. Oso bucco with risotto nearly inedible, really looked like cow poo. When I commented to Purser, I was told “others liked it” No offer of dessert, FA clearing tablecloth until I asked about dessert. “Oh, you want dessert?”


    2 FAs for eight seats, not good service. Worse, this was a PAID ticket, not some upgrade or miles weenie.


    I wrote to LH customer service via their website (a trial itself); response was $150.00 dinner credit with no instructions on how to get the credit.


    Pretty much done with LH.
