New DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne: Flinders Street hotel opens

Hilton HHonors members travelling to Melbourne have a new, central accommodation option with the opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne: Flinders Street hotel.

The 180-room property takes over from the current Accor Citigate Melbourne hotel following extensive renovations to the lobby, restaurant, bar, meeting rooms and bedrooms.

A great base for leisure and business travellers, the hotel is centrally-located in Melbourne’s CBD on Flinders Street – just across from the historic Flinders Street station and Federation Square.

Hilton’s current Melbourne hotels – Hilton South Wharf and Hilton on the Park – aren’t well-situated for CBD visitors, with the former anchored over near the Convention and Exhibition Centre, while the latter is opposite the MCG and Rod Laver Arena.

Guests at the hotel will enjoy a warm cookie on arrival, along with 24-hour business and fitness centres, meeting rooms with space for up to 140 guests and free Internet access in public areas.

With an open fire, visitors to Melbourne can relax at the lobby bar, watching the hustle and bustle on Flinders Street while ordering from a menu of grab-and-go breakfast, lunch and snack offerings, plus a range of beers, wines, cocktails and soft drinks.

The new restaurant has an open kitchen that serves up flame-grilled steaks, classic comfort dishes and the latest Melbourne foodie trends – from tapas to share-plates, sliders and more.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne: Flinders Street hotel adds to DoubleTree’s existing roster of hotels in Australia, including the DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns hotel that opened in October.

The chain also has two hotels open in Darwin and one in Alice Springs, with two more on the way in each of Perth and Fremantle.

Members of the Hilton HHonors program can earn and redeem points at the new Melbourne hotel from its transition date on December 1, with Gold and Diamond members enjoying their usual perks such as free in-room Internet access and breakfast at the hotel.

As a Category 6 property, 30,000-50,000 HHonors points is enough for a completely free overnight stay, with the exact number of points required fluctuating based on the time of year and the forecast demand for rooms.

Melbourne's Hilton on the Park hotel will leave the Hilton brand come January 1st, instead changing hands and forging ahead as the Pullman Melbourne on the Park.

Cool, so it's not actually a new hotel, right. It's just the current CitiGate painted 'DoubleTree'.

Still, a lot of expansion from the famous five (IHG, Marriott, Starwood, Accor and Hilton,) goin' on.

    So no Executive Lounge? Pity.

Have stayed there once on a cheap package - great location.

Funny to see the two chains swapping properties with Hilton -> Pullman and Citigate -> Doubletree in the same city at roughly the same time.

Not a terribly good location if you ask me.

Imagine being confronted by the smell of hot chips and vinegar from the Lord of the Fries outlet next door!

Elizabeth Street needs to smarten up!
