Marriott eyes 50 hotels for Australia, NZ, Pacific region by 2020

Marriott's portfolio of hotels in Australia, New Zealand and the broader Pacific region will stretch to 50 properties by the end of 2020, aided by its recent acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

With 24 locations currently  within the region, those ambitious expansion plans see that figure more than double in just four years.

The expansion gives a particular focus to secondary and emerging cities, with a Four Points by Sheraton slated for Parramatta in western Sydney, along with Aloft and Sheraton hotels opening in Adelaide.

Also on the horizon is Aloft Perth, opening in 2017, followed by Aloft Melbourne South Yarra and Marriott Melbourne Docklands, also expected by 2020.

Marriott's plans too include the return of Ritz-Carlton in Australia with The Ritz-Carlton Sydney scheduled for 2021, The Ritz-Carlton Perth and The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne, and next year will additionally mark the re-entry of  W Hotels to Australia with the opening of W Brisbane.

Marriott and Starwood are yet to combine their respective loyalty programs, although the current Starwood Preferred Guest scheme is a favourite of many Aussie travellers who convert their Starpoints into frequent flyer points at generous rates.

    You would think that - with their status of 'global' world cities - at least Sydney and Melbourne would be deserving of a top-of-the-line J.W. Marriott hotel each.

    It is odd that of all the 'major' hotel chains, Marriott has had a history of being quite reticent to position it's properties in Australia - and this is prior to the SPG takeover.

    C'mon Marriott - where are the AC Hotels, Renaissance, Edition and Springhill options?

    And this ignores the newer brands introduced to Marriott by the SPG merger / takeover. Can we look forward to more W Hotels, Westin product, Luxury Collection, Le Meridien etc?

    It's one thing to become the world's largest hospitality group .. but another thing entirely to properly represent an overly voluminous 'brand' portfolio throughout the world. Particularly in a sophisticated smaller market such as Australasia - where brands are known but under or entirely unrepresented.

    Would be great to have a couple of properties in NZ. There are zero SPG properties yet Westpac World Card in NZ offers SPG gold. I'm surprised they didn't set up at least in Queenstown already.

    Yes, SPG hasn't had a NZ property since the Sheraton Auckland became the Langham several years ago.
