Malaysia Airlines brings Airbus A380 to Paris, Hong Kong

Malaysia Airlines will begin daily Airbus A380 flights to Paris tomorrow, March 1, with the superjumbo also set to make the shorter hop to Hong Kong.

The Kuala Lumpur-Paris route has been on the cards for some time, and follows the introduction of a double-daily A380 service to London as MAS welcomed a fifth superjumbo into its fleet.

However, MAS chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya only today revealed the addition of a KL-HK run during a press conference held for the airline's financial results.

Update: while Ahmad Jauhari Yahya cited April 1 as the start date for Hong Kong A380 flights, the global distribution system (GDS) used by travel agents indicates the service will begin on May 1st.

MAS has engaged French chef Amandine Chaignot to design its menu for the KL-Paris run, and also offers the airline's "Chef on Call" service where travellers can choose from a wider selection of meals before they board the plane.

MAS previously planned to bring its A380 onto the Sydney-KL route from November last year, with Melbourne slated for March 2013, to provide an 'A380 all the way' experience from Sydney and Melbourne through to London, but axed that plan in October last year.

Earlier this year the Malaysian flag-carrier joined the oneworld alliance, taking its place alongside an A-league roster of airlines including Qantas, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and American Airlines.

    whats the point of putting the A380 on such as short route (HKG)?

    Because the flight from Paris arrives at 6:50am and doesn't leave until 11:55pm

    Leaving the plane on the ground for 17 hours doesn't make sense.

    But you can fit in a run to HKG in that time.

    That makes sense if its just a gap filler.

    I was referring to the distance - strange to put a long haul plane on a regional route.

    It will not just be a gap filler as it would be pretty expensive to have the big bird do a short hop. Not sure abt the economics of the flight (what does the loadfactor have to be to make it more profitable to do a short hop to HKG as opposed to have it stand idle on the tarmac at KUL). Also the crews on A380 planes are often dedicated to the planes and with a scheduled flying time of 3.50 it seems to long to do a return (for cockpit crew at least?).

    Currently MAS has only two flights to a day to HKG operated in the morning by a A330 and in the evening by a 737. They do codeshare on 4 CX flights. If I look in GDS I can see that MH is keeping the total amount of flights the same, 2 on MH metal and 4 codeshares. The A380 will operate the first flight of the day (MH72, departure 915am, currently MH72 as well but with a 725am operated by the A330). There is now a 925am departure but it is a CX flight operated by a 777. This flight will still be available as codeshare. So basically two big birds heading to HKG within 10 mins of each other. For a limited amount of time they are even adding a flight at 340pm on their own metal. They must foresee a growth potential for the sector.

    Even with their new seats, the CX KL-HK flight is superior because CX uses their new "cube" seats on these flights.

    Whereas MH's A380 still has the old, climb over your neighbor seats.

    17 hour gap filler ? Would,nt that get you a KL - Mel - KL /  KL-Syd- KL ? Come on MAS ! Bring it here!

    That would not work, scheduled flying time is around 8hrs and you would need at least 2 hours on the ground for servicing in KUL, SYD and back in KUL, making it a total of 22hrs at least to operate the route KUL-SYD or KUL-MEL rtn before being able to take off to Europe.

    I thought as much , but recheduling for 2 hours shouldnt be a deal breaker ? anyway here,s hoping as Im on their A380 in July .

    The MAS website states that this A380 is their 5th . I remember reading they had 6 on order? Does anyone know this to be true? and if so , any ideas when and where it will be flying to?

    just a comment on the booking process for Malaysia airlines.

    I was to book a flight out of colombo to paris in bus connecting with their a380 flights from kuala lumpur to paris. I was going through the planning process checking  the flights on their website and making sure I could get connecting flights with lufthansa flights in europe then went back to the malaysian site to book the flight only to find that their booking portal would not allow any bookings beyond kuala lumpur. No big problem, obviously a issue with their website as the flights & seats were available when booking them in segments. So rang malaysian to talk to them about it. Their response was disturbing to say the least. 

    I spoke to three operators, ending up with the department which handles e-bookings and on each occasion I was told that I could not book because of busy flights. They persisted in this response even after I could show that no onward bookings could be made to any destination for any month of 2013. 

    I found it amazing and disturbing that at no time were they interested in seeking a resolution to such an obvious problem. They wouldn't do anything about informing their IT department to have a look at it. Only after pressuring them did they suggest that I email IT which I did with no response from them.

    The chronic disinterest by the malaysian staff was amazing and disturbing as when you travel as much as I do on business you need to know that if something goes wrong you can trust that the airline will resolve issue which arise.

    Anyway, I booked bus on emirates to paris and a few hours later checking on the malaysian site the problem had been fixed, but no one had bothered to inform me of this.

    At same time a friend was also booking on the malaysian site (I had recommended malaysian to him because of the new 380's & the oneworld membership), with a different issue arising from his booking he too went through a similar route with exactly the same result -  a resounding disinterest.

    My point? A good airline is much more than it's aircraft & seats it is the quality of service which surrounds & supports it.

    I have had similar issues . The admin side of MAS and their website is well below standard, although booking FF points flights was easier online. 

    Its a great shame as their product on board is good, and their service on board , I find very good in J. I consider them the "in between" airline,not low cost but no means high end.
