How to maximise your KrisFlyer miles via ANZ Rewards credit cards

How to maximise your KrisFlyer miles via ANZ Rewards credit cards

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles are a popular choice for savvy travellers, and thanks to a quirky web of partnerships between the ANZ Rewards program, Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines, there’s a nifty way to boost the number of KrisFlyer miles you can earn on your everyday spends.

It’s done by converting your ANZ Rewards points not into KrisFlyer miles directly, but into Virgin Australia Velocity points instead – and then later transforming those points once more from regular Velocity points into KrisFlyer miles.

This works because ANZ converts points across to KrisFlyer on a 3:1 basis, but uses a more generous 2:1 rate when shifting points over to Velocity.

Velocity then allows you to convert those points into KrisFlyer miles at its own 1.35:1 rate. Crunch the numbers and you’ll find more KrisFlyer miles in your account at the end of the day from the same starting balance of ANZ Rewards points.

For example, convert 180,000 ANZ Rewards points directly into KrisFlyer miles ‘the normal way’ at a 3:1 ratio and you’d wind up with 60,000 KrisFlyer miles in your Singapore Airlines account.

Or, convert those same 180,000 ANZ Rewards points into Virgin Australia Velocity points at a 2:1 rate and you’d receive 90,000 Velocity points. Take those same 90,000 Velocity points, convert them onwards to KrisFlyer at Velocity’s 1.35:1 rate, and you’d wind up with a higher 66,667 KrisFlyer miles.

That’s a boost of over 11% to your final KrisFlyer balance – or more astutely, to the number of KrisFlyer miles you can earn per dollar spent!

What's more, ANZ is currently waiving its usual annual fees on new Rewards Black, Rewards Platinum and Rewards cards, getting you points without paying a cent!

Here’s how that looks on a per-card basis:

ANZ Rewards Black Visa: Earn up to 2 ANZ Rewards points per dollar spent. That’s equal to 0.66 KrisFlyer miles when converted at the usual 3:1 rate, but when shipped over via Velocity, fetches 0.74 KrisFlyer miles per dollar spent instead.

ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures Visa and ANZ Rewards Platinum Visa: Both cards award up to 1.5 ANZ Rewards points per dollar spent, on-par with 0.50 KrisFlyer miles when converted directly from ANZ but increased to 0.55 KrisFlyer miles when taking the Velocity route.

ANZ Rewards Visa: With up to one ANZ Reward point dished up per dollar spent, that's equal to 0.33 KrisFlyer miles per dollar spent via a ‘normal’ conversion or a slightly-higher 0.37 KrisFlyer miles by converting your points via Velocity.

Whichever card you slip into your wallet, you can also turbocharge your ANZ Rewards balance – and thus, your KrisFlyer miles – by shopping online through ANZ’s own ANZ Rewards Bonus Points Mall, with up to 10 bonus ANZ Rewards points per dollar spent up for grabs!

I dont think this works out in our favour.  Compare a BNE-SIN Economy reward flight on SG.  Its 70,000 VFF points or 56000 KF points.         This redemption will cost the punter,  140000 ANZ points to book on Virgiin,    168000 ANZ points to book with SG,   or 151200 ANZ points to convert to VFF then to KF.
