Hertz puts BMWs on the rent-a-car roster

Hertz is adding BMWs to its rental fleet, making it the first Australian car hire company to offer the German marque.

Four of the most popular Beemers are listed under the Hertz Prestige Collection, which also includes the Mercedes C200K.

You can choose from the BMW 118i five-door hatch (a compact premium sports hatch which is the only rear-wheel drive in its class), the 320i sedan, the mid-size X3 all-wheel-drive sportster and the BMW X5 30d, which BMW claims is "the world’s top-selling large luxury lifestyle vehicle".

"Hertz revolutionised the industry when we introduced the ability to book a vehicle by its make and model in our Prestige Collection" said Chris Rusden, Vice President of Hertz Australia and New Zealand.

"We're now very excited to become the only rental car company in Australia to offer a range of desirable and innovative vehicles from BMW."

Hoping this doesn't mark the end of the Merc's, but looking forward to more options in any case!

I'm unsure how Hertz revolutionised the industry when they introduced the ability to book a vehicle by its make and model in our Prestige Collection.

I've now rented the 320i, X3, and X5's from Hertz and have to say I'm disappointed that they've gone for the absolute minimum spec.

All of these cars come with no GPS navigation - compared with the Mercedes (and previously the Lexus IS and RX models) which all had Satnav.

Also, no reversing cameras, even on the X3/X5 - which I find as much a safety hazard as disappointing (even their Toyota Klugers have a reversing camera).

I think it's a big mistake to expect people to rent a premium model without any premium features!
