Google takes on Apple's iPad with new Nexus tablets

Google is firing a well-aimed shot across Apple’s bow with its Nexus tablets, including next week's debut of the all-new Nexus 10.

The Nexus 10 goes toe-to-toe against the classic 9.7 inch iPad. As you’d guess from the name, this sports a 10 inch screen – and one that’s designed for full hi-definition video (1080HD), as well as boasting a 300 pixel-per-inch display which eclipses the 264ppi ‘Retina’ panel of the latest iPads.

The Nexus 10 will be available from November 13 and lists at $469 for the 16GB WiFi model and $569 for the 32GB edition.

There's also been a pleasing tweak to the Nexus 7, which launched in June and it now facing Apple's new iPad Mini – a product largely and correctly seen as Apple’s attempt to slice out a corner of the mid-sized tablet market (even though the smaller iPad is priced well north of the Nexus).

Google has gone all-out on the ‘better value’ positioning of its 7 inch tablet. Storage has been doubled while the price remains the same: $249 now gets you 16GB with WiFi instead of the previous entry-level 8GB, while $299 delivers 32GB with WiFi.

While Google also unveilled a 32GB model with 3G mobile broadband, this isn’t available in Australia at the time of writing.
