Free Star Alliance Gold status match from Avianca Brazil

Free Star Alliance Gold status match from Avianca Brazil

Fancy perks like priority check-in, a boosted baggage allowance and free airport lounge access across the Star Alliance network including with Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, United and more?

Any Gold or Platinum-level frequent flyer card with practically any airline – including Qantas and Virgin Australia – will see you ‘matched’ to Star Alliance Gold status with the alliance’s newest member Avianca Brazil, but you’ll need to act fast as this deal is only open for a short time.

For the uninitiated, ‘status matching’ allows you to parlay one frequent flyer card to receive another yet without meeting the normal flying requirements, such as using Qantas Gold to net Star Alliance Gold via Avianca Brazil.

Importantly, you get to keep your original frequent flyer status while also gaining access to the perks and privileges of Star Alliance Gold: yours to enjoy until March 31 2017.

Star Alliance Gold status match: what you’ll need

First up, you’ll require what Avianca Brazil terms a ‘first category’ frequent flyer card such as Qantas Platinum/Platinum One (Oneworld Emerald) or Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum, or a ‘second category’ card like Qantas Gold (Oneworld Sapphire) or Velocity Gold.

Although Qantas Gold is technically in third place behind both Platinum One and Platinum, we experienced no issues in using one as part of our status match request, with Avianca Brazil recognising both Platinum and Platinum One as ‘first category’ owing to their joint Oneworld Emerald status.

Next, you’ll need to register for Avianca Brazil’s Amigo frequent flyer program via the airline’s website to receive an ‘Amigo number’, or in simple terms, your Avianca Brazil frequent flyer number.

(Avianca LifeMiles members, take note that Avianca Brazil is a different airline to Avianca with a separate frequent flyer program, which you’ll need to join to take advantage of this status match offer.)

The registration form initially demands a ‘CPF’ – Brazil’s version of a tax file number or social security code – but when selecting ‘Australia’ as your nationality from the drop down box, this field becomes optional.

On completing your registration, make a note of your Amigo membership number as you’ll need it shortly and might not immediately receive it again via your welcome email.

Star Alliance Gold status match: how to apply

Using the same email address you signed up with, send an email to promo.amigo@avianca.com.br with the subject line “Solicitação para alteração de categoria de cartão Programa AMIGO” and your details as follows, or simply click here to pre-fill your default email program with the same.

Preencha as informações abaixo, e lembre-se de anexar a imagem do seu cartão mais alto de outra companhia aérea.

Nome completo: (Enter your full name here to match your Amigo profile)

Número AMIGO: (Your Amigo membership number here)

Avianca Brazil is accepting status match requests only until November 30 2015, and all applications must also be accompanied by a clear photograph of your highest-level frequent flyer card for verification purposes.

Although our initial status match request went unanswered, we submitted a follow-up email and five business days later received a reply in Portuguese to advise our match had been approved, and that our new frequent flyer card was immediately available via the Avianca Brazil website:

We’d expect a physical membership card to eventually arrive via snail mail, but printing the temporary card (or even taking a screenshot on your smartphone) allows you to begin enjoying the benefits of your Star Alliance Gold frequent flyer status across the global Star Alliance network.

In Australian skies, that includes with Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air New Zealand, ANA (from December), Asiana Airlines, EVA Air, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Thai Airways and United, while further abroad, there’s also Lufthansa, SAS, SWISS and Turkish Airlines.

Avianca Brazil: your ticket to Star Alliange Gold lounges the world over...

Filling out the Star Alliance roster: Adria, Aegean, Austrian, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Egyptair, Ethiopian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, TAP Portugal and of course, Avianca Brazil, all of which will recognise your new Star Alliance Gold status.

I found that my initial request received no auto-reply, although my follow-up email did receive an instant automated response, which was followed by an email five business days later with details of the benefits of my newly-matched membership, so hopefully it comes through for you in a few days.

Don't you then have to credit your points to this program in order to get the benefits? I'm flying SQ J in December and crediting points to Virgin but would love the benefits of Gold level membership but don't want to credit points to this program.

The only real benefit you'd get from Star Alliance Gold in this instance is the increased baggage allowance on SQ if you needed to travel with more than the standard business class inclusions, as lounge access and 'priority everything' already come with the business class ticket. In this instance I'd just leave your Velocity number on the booking.

(And no, you don't need to send your points to Avianca Brazil - it's certainly easier to do it that way and to enter the Star Alliance Gold frequent flyer number on the booking to display on your boarding pass, but you can still present the Star Alliance Gold card to receive the benefits while crediting points to a different program.)

Can some one enlighten me about which Star Alliance airlines is the easiest to "maintain or keep" Gold Status once you get there, Aegean, AirNZ or Avianca?

    Thank you

From scratch (over a 12 month period) I think it is still Aegean Airlines. To maintain status Turkish Airlines gives you two years to accrue the mileage. I also think Asiana has a similar deal done over the same period. TK also status match. So if you have Gold already try TK. Maintaining with Avianca will be harder. They want more miles. I hope I got this right. Cheers.

    Thanks for that info Ho,

i will investigate both Turkish and Asiana. I have flown Asiana a few times and they seem sort of all right. I believe Turkish may begin flying to Oz soon. Given I have QF and Virgin Platinum, if Asiana status match and are easier to maintain then it would be a good choice given you can travel to North America as well as Europe on Asiana whereas Turkish are limited to Europe and Avinca don't get anywhere near Oz.

Thanks to all the contributo to this subject. I am pleased that Avinca have granted Gold status to many. I thought I will try out Turkish Airlines as apparently they allow up to 2 years to accrue the requisite points. It was quite an ordeal and I am not sure if I will do it again. As suggested I went to their website and joined the programme Miles&Smiles in November 2015.  Subsequently I sent them a request for status match. Although I have both Qantas and Virgin platinum and Aegean Gold I thought a 2 year accrual might give more flexibility with Turkish Airlines. Of course I got a standard automatic response immediately that they had received my message but then nothing happened for many a week. I sent them another E Mail about 6 weeks later. I then received another message saying that I should send personal details including photocopies of the front and back of my driver's licence, the front and back of the Qantas Frequent flyer card., Qantas frequent flyer statements for 12 months. I must I felt very uneasy about it all as the Qantas card has the credit card details and then on top of that the drivers licence. Very scary to send such personal information via the web. This was now mid to late January, almost 2 months. My Qantas anniversary is the end of January. After about 3 weeks they wanted me to send them my New Qantas Card and new statement as the old card was due to expire. Ridiculous to say the least as my Qantas statement had clearly stated at I had retained Platinum status for 2016. In any event with trepidation I sent it Gain with all the personal details. In February  I received an E mail informing me that I have been given a "provisional" gold status as long as I take a Turkish airline international flight within 3 months. That clearly may be an impossibility for many people including most likely me but as it happens I am going to be in Europe in May 2016 so I may be able to take a flight with them. To me these are too restrictive and not worth the bother. received an E mail informing me that I have been given

This is disappointing to hear. I'm not a member of TK's Miles & Smiles. As mentioned before TK and OZ (Asiana) are the only Star Alliance airlines with the two-year accrual period. Very enticing. Unfortunately TK seem to have a customer service issue. Many have the same opinion (you can search online). I guess in hindsight OZ would have been better. Trying with Avianca for one year as a stop gap would've been perfect. I guess now it will be a just wait and see approach if any other Star Alliance airline will status match over the next 12-months or so. There's nothing to lose by actually contacting the airline and specifying your interests and travels. You never know unless you try. Cheers

Mine came through yesterday. Originally sent the request off on 11th October.

Does anyone know if they will send a physical card for this? Their website still says "You can use this card until you complete your fifth flight.", but others seem to have a tendency to send a card immediately for higher status.

Take a screenshot or save the page as a PDF. If you hava an imaging app on your Mac or PC you can crop and resize the image to suit. You can also convert or export the .jpg from the screenshot as a PDF. And...You can keep the image (.jpg) or the PDF on your mobile or if you have an app such as Stocard you can key in the membership number of your card and have a barcode as well.

Interesting development to report. I sent my application for a status match around mid November and finally received an email overnight to say I had been approved with reciprocal gold membership. The unexpected bonus was that my gold status runs until 31 March 2018. My wife did a status match which was approved in Dec however (and consistent with others who have posted here) her status is in place until 31 March 2017. Assuming my experience is applied consistently then there is some hope that those readers who made their applications in late November but before the deadline on the 30th, may also get a 31 March 2018 expiry date. Happy new year to all
