Emirates adds fourth daily Sydney-Dubai Airbus A380 flight

Emirates will fly a fourth daily service between Sydney and Dubai from 25 March 2018 – and like its three siblings, the service will run on the Qantas partner's flagship Airbus A380.

The new addition to the schedule is EK416/417, and here's where the timings stand.

From 25 March to 30 March 2018, the inbound service EK416 will depart Dubai at 8.40pm and arrive into Sydney at 5.20pm the following day. Once daylight savings kicks out from 31 March 2018, the Sydney arrival time slides back to 4.30pm.

From 26 March to 31 March 2018, the outbound service EK417 will depart Sydney at 5.05pm and reach Dubai at 12.25am the following day. Again, the demise of daylight savings will see EK417 departing Sydney at 4.15pm starting 1 April.

Emirates says the new flight will provide passengers travelling from Europe and North Africa greater connectivity to Australia, as well as complementing Qantas’ rerouting of Sydney-London flights via Singapore instead of Dubai.

Those times roughly approximate the Sydney-Dubai roster for QF1, which is currently wheels-up from Sydney at 3.50pm to arrive into Dubai at 12.25am.

"Emirates’ new service will offer passengers an afternoon departure from Sydney and a convenient arrival in main European cities the following morning," the airline said in a statement.

"It also introduces a new option for passengers to depart London and main European cities in the morning with an afternoon arrival in Sydney the next day with a short connection in Dubai."

    Far out...why doesn't Qantas just run its new 787 from the east cost to Dubai and then back. Surely they can fill that metal.

    So I guess this will use the A380 that arrived at EK418 earlier in the morning and then the inbound EK416 will become EK419 and return to Dubai via Bangkok?

    Easy--by not being formed by the same aircraft.

    As per henrus' comment upstream, the arrangement is almost certain to be that the new SYD-DXB (EK417) departing at 1705 will be flown by the aircraft on the DXB-BKK-SYD (EK418) arriving at 0900, and that the new DXB-SYD (EK416) arriving at 1720 will turn to form the SYD-BKK-DXB (EK419) departing at 1930.

    It definitely helps that all four of their SYD flights will be on A380s; it also helps that the SYD-AKL-SYD sector is being taken off EK418/419 in favour of near-double-daily QF A330 metal.

    Absolutely, Watson.. This was exactly what I predicted when EK removed SYD-AKL-SYD in my previous posting.  When QF1 is rerouted via SIN and will be pulled out completely from DXB, it made even more sense to introduce this 4th daily flight to grab QF's slot. For the flight DXB-SYD then changed to SYD-BKK-DXB means less time for EK being parked in the airport (1.5 hours). Same goes for DXB-BKK-SYD then becomes SYD-DXB (8 hours vs 10 hours previously). For the new DXB-SYD departing 20:40 hours will certainly cater for early European departures particularly for the major cities like London, Paris, Frankfurt. EK might adopt the same for DXB-MEL eventually. Having said that there may be a wait before EK introduces MEL 4th daily because QF9 although will be rerouted via Perth, the slot has been used by EK for BNE 3rd daily flight.

    Most welcome news, especially as it will be on the A380.  However, it would seem that Adelaide is a bit under served in the international direct flights department.  Adelaide is growing as Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Gold Coast, Brisbane become too expensive, crowded.  Though Adelaide too one day will resemble those cities eventually.

    If there was a business case to warrant flying out of ADL, then pretty sure airlines would be. Clearly there isn't....

    Another Qantas own goal, i have just flown Emirates Syd to Uk then back Qantas (first class both ways). Why any business person would vacate a market they should own is beyond me, nor is the constant cost reductions on premium priced first and business product. And before the QF social media people mark me down please remember that some of us on this forum actually travel regularly in both first and business, unlike the keyboard warriors.

    The Qantas offering is a sad and dim reflection of what it used to be, the wine list on QF is what you would be embarrassed to serve at a BBQ last nights flight was Juniper estate cab sav ($63 at cellar door and cheaper elsewhere) and certainly not a match for most airlines business class wines. Emirates had 2004 Cos D Estournel $400+?. Now that Neil Perry has ruined the food his team are destroying the wine list, cant help but wondering at times if he really works for star alliance.

    You're right , EK419 leaving SYD at  1830 and arriving in DXB at 0605 takes more than 17.5 hours compared to their other flights (14.5 hrs ) , as this one goes through Bangkok.

    Interestingly this new service from DXB to SYD arrival opens up onward connections.  QF flights to AKL,CHC and WLG along with regional NSW services would connect allowing a PM arrival into these places.

    More choices for customers and a smart use of the JV I think!

    Sadly this service ek417 SYD>DXB is being run on old boeing 2-3-2 configurations angle flat. Not pleased had my nice single window seat on the A380 and now this. First world problems but not what I paid for.
