HSBC credit card customers can earn 20% more frequent flyer points on purchases until the end of the year thanks to the bank’s latest promotion, giving HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa cardholders up to 1.2 Qantas Points per dollar on eligible everyday spend until the New Year begins.
It works like this: existing HSBC customers need to register for the deal by sending an SMS with only the last four digits of their HSBC credit card number to 0447 174 641, from the mobile phone number that HSBC has on file for the account.
(It wouldn’t hurt to make sure your details are up-to-date before texting, by logging into HSBC online banking, clicking ‘manage your account’, then the ‘my details’ link on the left, and ensuring your correct mobile phone number appears in the ‘mobile’ box.)
If everything is in order, you’ll get an immediate SMS back from HSBC to confirm your enrolment in the promotion:
Then, every time you spend on your HSBC card between October 17 and December 31 2017, you’ll earn 20% more points than you normally would – up to a maximum of 10,000 bonus points – which will be credited to your card account by January 31 2018.
Take the HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa as an example. Normally, cardholders can earn one Qantas Point per dollar spent up to $2,500 per month, and 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar spent thereafter: up to 7,500 Qantas Points per month as of November 1 2017, excluding any bonus points earned.
Register for this promotion and that’s boosted to 1.2 Qantas Points per $1 spent up to $2,500 per month, and 0.6 Qantas Points per dollar spent on the next $10,000 of monthly spend.
(That’s what you’d normally need to spend to reach the new monthly cap of 7,500 Qantas Points, but as the cap doesn’t apply to bonus points, you can really earn up to 9,000 Qantas Points each month with that bonus factored in.)
If you don’t already have an HSBC credit card, now’s the perfect time to apply – because you can also pick up 60,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply by June 30 2018 and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months on a new HSBC Platinum Qantas Visa via a separate sign-up offer.
Once the card reaches your door, you could then register for the extra 20% points promotion by following the steps above, and although you can’t stack the offers (you won’t earn a 20% bonus on those 60,000 bonus points), you’ll still be able to earn extra points on your regular purchases until the year’s end.
You can also pocket one bonus Qantas Point per dollar spent when using the card to purchase Qantas flights or other services directly from the airline such as Qantas Club airport lounge membership, over and above the card's normal earn rate, with these bonus points also not subjected to the monthly cap.
