Krisflyer or Asiana Club: what would you choose?

Hi all,

I’m diversifying a bit this year and did a big spreadsheet of my Star Alliance flights. I’ll earn Star Alliance Gold with both Krisflyer and Asiana by June and can’t decide where to credit. Any ideas? I’m based in London with quite a lot of travel to China and a decent amount to australia. Thanks!

Pros for Asiana:
-Will be about 3.5 years of SA Gold due to the two year earning period
-good redemption rates for eg Lufthansa transatlantic first

Pros for Krisflyer:
-easier to earn miles due to credit cars spend
-can use it for Suites redemption

Krisflyer you would have the advantage of being able to use the Virgin lounges if flying domestically within Australia.

Asiana you have a longer qualification period (2y vs 1y) and miles (40k vs 50k) for Star Alliance Gold.

Very true re Virgin but took advantage of the delta status match so am covered for Virgin...

The 2yr qualification period and then 2 yr “status” period is a big winner for Asiana.

As you said you're based in London, keep in mind that KrisFlyer Gold (and the PPS levels) have the added benefit of providing access to Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse lounges when flying with Virgin Atlantic, which isn't available to Asiana Club members (as Virgin Atlantic obviously isn't Star Alliance, and instead has a direct partnership with SQ).

KrisFlyer/PPS members aren't allowed to being guests into Clubhouses, however.

If its Star Alliance, I'd go with Thai. Each year they give gold members a free round trip upgrade + a round trip at 50% number of points. Thats only 90K points for a business class ticket Eur-Aus. Include your round trip at 50% points and thats 2 business class trips Eur-Aus for 90K points + the price of an economy ticket. Took the wife Melbourne-Rome last year for AUD1500+95K points. A350's all the way. Free massage at the Thai Spa at Bangkok, and Clicquot champagne flowing like water

Highly recommend TK if you are based in London. Deservingly awarded European airline of the year 3 times running. Status holds for 2 years with requal across one or two years - excellent if travel is cyclic. Good redemptions and have always got the flights and class of travel I wanted.
