mattress on the business class fold down beds are more like a wooden plank

I recently flew on a Singapore Airlines A380 overnight and was surprised at how hard the mattress was on the fold down bed on the older business class seats. it was more like a 2 inch wooden plank than a soft comfortable mattress. pretty disappointed with how uncomfortable it is. You would expect something a little more comfortable for what you pay.

Funny, you didn’t mention the airline in the thread title, but I knew you meant SQ even before clicking. It’s one of the standout drawbacks of the SQ J bed (the other being the little footwell)... and given the refurbed biz product is still pretty much the same, it’s a little inexcusable tbh. The cynic in me says they made a conscious decision to make biz a little less comfortable so people don’t downgrade from First... but surely not?

Either way, you’re spot on, the SQ J bed is surprisingly uncomfortable.

Their new 787-10 J has rectified those problems.

...but is now considerably narrower than the A380 and B777-300ER J seats (but I digress).

I agree - 'Firm' is an understatement.
