OneUp success on Air NZ longhaul

By djtech | Jan 06, 2019, 08:22 PM
Taking the Air New Zealand longest flight from Auckland to Chicago in 10 days. The plane is quite full and I'm seated in the 4th last row of economy. Skycouch is a whopping $849 (3/4 of my ticket). I could try and upgrade to Premium Economy by bidding and so far the cabin is only half-full as far as I know. Have any of you had experience with OneUp bidding on Air NZ particularly on Longhaul routes to the US? As to the amount I'm willing to pay aronud $500 at most. Would that give me a good chance of success or should I go higher or lower?

Note: Not an Air NZ elite, exit rows are full.

I wouldn't put a huge amount of hope on a one up succeeding on a Long Haul route on Air New Zealand - upgrades to the Americas are hugely competitive, and then one ups are at the bottom of the pile after Airpoints upgrades (NZ Elites only) and Recognition Upgrades (available to Elites, Golds and Silver members).

There's normally not much left after that bunch!

Have you looked at doing a One Up to a Skycouch instead? I believe they recently introduced the ability to do this. You should be able to submit a cheaper bid than the $849 quoted above and it's probably marginally more likely to succeed than a bid for Premium Economy.

I don't think Skycouch is available if you're travelling alone. If that's right I'd just give PE One Up your best shot at $500 and keep your fingers crossed.

In the past we have nearly always been successful on one up bids from PE to business going AKL to LAX/SFO. We have no status with Air NZ and we bid about 5 - 10% above minimum. Likewise family that have used it for economy to PE have seen similar. Most of the time we did not hear until a few hours prior. Oddly however, we have had less success coming back.

But either way, no harm in putting a bid in.

100% success rate from premium to biz and always bidding very slightly above the minimum allowed bid.

Star alliance gold with Singapore, nothing with NZ.

Try it. Worst case scenario, it doesn’t work.
