Air New Zealand to fly direct Perth to London?

By delly | Sep 27, 2017, 09:25 AM

Just heard on the radio that Air New Zealand will fly a Dreamliner from Auckland to Perth then on to LHR to compete against Qantas. Air New Zealand has a new lounge under construction at Perth International.

Awesome news! Been waiting to hear this. Certainly a better stopover than LAX.
Guessing they will code share with VA within Australia?

Thanks for sharing this info, guys, we're looking into this further – there's been no announcement from AirNZ so this may have just been a "we'd like to" or "in the future we plan to" observation – we'll come back with a bit more once we're heard back from AirNZ.

If this is true imagine the coup for air nz if they start before Qantas!
Would absolutely destroy all of Qantas's publicity!
Only thing stopping them would be slots in London. Doubt they would stop LA - London as very popular.
Does Air NZ have trafic rights from Australia to countries other than NZ?
Know they have rights Australia - US but what about UK?
They could also stun Qantas now by flying Perth to European destinations non stop, Frankfurt particularly.
Already have all their facilities in Perth and London already so could start very quickly! Maybe this has been on drawing board for a while! Hasn't air nz lounge in Perth just been upgraded!
Good luck to them!

Are you referring to the "Rumour File" by any chance?

Are you sure they weren't just repeating speculation from this forum 10 days ago... https://www.ausbt.com.au/community/view/50/6351/new-international-destinations-for-air-nz-in-2018?

Thought only QF and BA could do non stop flights due to rights etc

For the life of me I can't see why NZ would attempt this as they are simply moving the dots on the map.

They canned the HKG-LHR route a few years back and focused on LAX, so I can't see why this would be better other than go up against QF. The only benefit i can see would be to try and capture traffic to LHR that is otherwise going from MEL/SYD/BNE on NZ and feeding the flights via VA transcon codeshare but given the testy relationship with VA and the fact that VA have both EY and SQ codeshares to Europe that makes no sense either.

From AKL they already fly the optimum one stop route as shown below and the PER route is actually the longest by time:

AKL-HKG 11h15m

HKG-LHR 12h50m

Total 26h05m (incl 2hr HKG transit)

AKL-PER 7h30m

PER-LHR 17h20m

Total 26h50m (incl 2hr PER transit

AKL-LAX 12h10m

LAX-LHR 10h30m

Total 24h40m (incl 2hr LAX transit)

Taken from google flights, and airline websites.
