Confused: Qantas Business Sale Fare

By rckjiang | May 29, 2019, 11:17 PM
Hi Hive:

Was searching for J seats to Europe when I discovered that Sale fare via Dubai gives only economy seat from Dubai onwards on EK metal, even though it’s a business class fare.

Has anyone come across that? Is this something new?

Has the flight an EK number, rather than a QF number? If so, that could have something to do with it.

I’ve seen this quite often. Especially when looking at reward flights. The worst is when it’s called a J fare from say Paris to ADL, but it’ll be economy from Paris to Dubai, Dubai to Melbourne and only J from MEL - ADL!

No... it’s the QF number that attracts this “economy” leg. But if I select the Saver (instead of Sale) fare then the whole leg becomes Business. What’s the point of the sale fare then?

The point of the sale fare is that the cheaper business fare class is available from Australia to Dubai, but not onwards so you can take advantage of that.

This is related to the fare buckets used to book Business Sale and Business Saver fares. The lowest business class fare buckets (e.g. 'I') must be available on each flight segment for a Business Sale fare to be sold. If they're not, the entire routing must be priced using the higher fare buckets (e.g. 'D', 'C', 'J') available to the more expensive Business Saver or Flex fares. Alternatively, the unavailable segments instead placed in economy/premium economy fare buckets compatible with the Business Sale fare.
