Multi City Trip Advice......Mel - SFO - TOKYO - MEL

By LoveToFly | May 29, 2019, 05:02 PM
HI Everyone,
I am hoping I can get some help and I require some advice from the great AUSBT community.

I need to head to the US (San Fran) for a work conference in September. A week later I then need to get to Japan for the Rugby World Cup and then a week later back to Melbourne.

I am a QF Platinum and was hoping to use all One word airlines (QF, JAPAN AIRLINES or AA) and was hoping to find options.
I can't seem to find an option that works on the QF website. Im also a Virgin Gold if One World are not an option.

Thanks,
LoveToFly

Travel agents (online or offline) usually work best for these type of itineraries. OTAs usually allow you to filter by airline alliance. Try skyscanner.

The QF call centre people will help you here for no extra charge and a relatively quick answer of the phone as you’re platinum.

Have you considered just using JL to fly to SFO via Tokyo (i.e. MEL > NRT > SFO > NRT > MEL).

As it is a return ticket, with a single carrier it is likely to be cheaper than a more direct option. Downside, more time in the air. Upside, more status points.

Qantas has a multi-city tool online you can use to book your itinerary but it will price each flight one by one which could get really expensive. Alternatively, travel agents can work their magic.

Yes, I did this recently, but to LAX. Last minute booking, cheapest business option by far. A day in Tokyo on the way over, and a night on the way back. JAL comped the night at an airport hotel on the return (call to book) - very basic room, but clean and comfortable. Takes longer, obviously, but the jet lag was less of an issue at both ends.

you're probably going to have to do a mix/match

normally I would suggest you do the whole route by JAL too, but the night flight out of MEL does not seem to hit connections to US so well - most seem to have a long layover

a quick google indicates that it's nearly an 11 hour transit with change of airport from NRT, thus MEL/NRT then HND/SFO

on the flip side, September is sumo tournament in Tokyo if you have time/interest and the dates align

Oneworld does a circle Pacific fare. The webpage says to contact the airline or travel agent to work out fare. I had a friend do this a number of years ago and got a good deal, but I don’t know the cost nowadays.

As a travel agent I book alot of these for corporate clients, it's the oneworld Circle Pacific fare and available in business and economy. It usually prices around $3k in economy and just under $10k in business.

Hi Everyone, thanks for the great help and tips on this. The AUSBT community is the Best. I actually checked and put in the complete trip with JAL in business and was really pleasantly surprised that it was about $6k. 400 status credits will help prequalify for Platinum again also. Have a great weekend everyone.
