Poll: Qantas Airbus A380 first class vs Boeing 787 business class

By chillybags | May 22, 2019, 10:27 PM
Hi all,

Considering the A380 first class seats are now 10 years old how would you compare them to the new 787 business class seats in terms of hard product comfort. I haven’t flown either of these seats before.

I’m travelling from Melbourne to Lax and will use points (plenty available to use) and wanting to know what seating option would be better given a choice of flying QF93 or QF95 (A380 first vs the 787 business)

Cheers.

Hands down would choose the A380 first if considering the hard product only. So much more space and openness in that seat and the bedding it wider and much more comfortable. The Dreamliner does have a better entertainment screen, however depending on when you travel you may be get a refreshed A380 for which one of the only First updates is a better screen. Also, would gain access to the F lounge in Melbourne (if you're not a Platinum).

I’ll be flying before the refurb, so that aspect won’t affect me.

Thanks for the input. I’ll try jump on F if I can!

No doubt whatsoever. A380 First. Heaps more space, and very comfortable - with outstanding bedding.

The only downside with the A380 in First is that until after take-off and once they begin preparing for descent, the chair has to face directly forwards and there's very little legroom in this space (versus the 787 where the seat doesn't swivel, so you can always put your feet forwards as far as you can). That said, the A380 suite overall is much more spacious, so the A380 gets my vote.

There’s been about 25% of votes for the 787 business seat. I’d be curious to hear from one of the people who voted for that their reasoning since it seems to otherwise be a large majority saying the first class seat is better.

Based on recent experience the A380 F all the way. Did both the 787 and 380 in November - QF9 in J and returned on QF2 in F.

If you can access the F lounge irrespective of the ticket you purchase (you are P or P1) then I would choose the 787. Overall, it has a nicer feel to it, albeit a little less room. But as they say, ask a 100 people for an opinion and you get 100 opinions ……...

They're either trolling you or haven't been in F before. There's absolutely no question. Especially if you can get 1A or 1K - you forget there's anyone else on the plane. The new J seats are also a second rate product. Very pokey in the legwell and a cheaper finish than most other premium airlines' J offering. They should've gone with David Caon's original concept. Too many BCG graduates and bean counters at Qantas these days.

Is it really worthy of a poll?

The real issue with the 787 is when fully flat your legs are rather confined in a narrow-ish leg well that goes under the seat in front. Makes curling up tricky.

I think it depends on your height. I’m 6’4”, my wife is 5’1”. I really appreciate the extra room in F, she couldn’t care less about that.

Having just done A380 F to LAX and the B787 in J to NYC. I found the B787 to be cramped and narrow compared to F. The hard and soft product is by far superior in F.

I would only choose J if I was limited by points (or money) and wanting to save some for another trip. However if you have a stack of points as you said you do or if you were limited by time and can’t do 2x J trips vs 1x F trips then yeah go F

What about the value for points proposition? I know the OP said they have plenty, but surely it's a consideration?

Flown both myself. My Q First exp. was 1A same leg as you to LAX but in 2013 it was a bit newer then. I thought it was just ok and didn't not even compare to Emirates A380 First.
787 Business have flown its ok nice and quiet Plane but you cant beat the extra personal space and exclusivity that First gives.

NB:Flying Singapore A380 First on Friday for first time to Shanghai Cant wait!!
