Points-based rewards booking, Qantas Perth-London business class

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I am Platinum on Qantas and am planning a trip to London next year year. In the past I have been able to get FF business class seats on Cathay from Perth to London, however, I have noticed that the Cathay seats are becoming harder to get. As an alternative, I have been exploring trying to get business class seats on the Perth to London Qantas direct flight. On the searches I have done over the last couple of weeks for flights next year, I have never been able to see a business class seat on the direct flight. Only economy seats seem to be available. I was wondering if anyone has been successful in obtaining a business class seat using Qantas FF on the direct flight, or is it a question of calling Qantas to see if they will release those seats on the relevant date.

If you're talking about QF9 - unfortunately its one of those routes Qantas do not release any Business Class award seats. They have not explicitly said they don't release awards (like Qatar have in regard to their own F awards out of London) but they tend not to.

It's just QF9 and QF10 to/from London is so popular in business class that there's just no reason why they should release reward seats for it in advance.

have you asked for an award request being platinum, they can often release I class business seats as an award

You may have thought of this already, but if you're still interested in Cathay Pacific bookings, there's often greater availability on their flights to London Gatwick (LGW) than to Heathrow.

Perhaps the popularity of QF9/10 (for those in the east) will decline once the A380 upgrades are rolled out and LHR via SIN is available with the new J seats.

Thanks for the comments. I will try ringing Qantas to see if they will release any FF seats, otherwise will look at the Cathay Gatwick option. Last year there used to be a number of Cathay seats available but they seem to have dropped off quite a bit. As an alternative, does the same apply for the Singapore to Heathrow leg on Qantas? Again, I am struggling to find any business class seats. I can find seats on the Perth to Singapore leg but nothing from Singapore to Heathrow.

Just a further update, I called Qantas to query FF seats on the direct flight from Perth to London. I was told they do release them but there are not many (I mentioned I have not been able to find one on any of my searches going out 11.5 months) and suggested I call closer to when seats are released to see if they can request seats for me as I am platinum - though no promises as its a popular flight.

Another option is Cathay to Manchester, if you don't mind getting to London by other means from there. There always seems to be plenty of business class availability to Manchester from Hong Kong, although the major bottleneck with Cathay seems to be flights out of Australia.

As a Platinum I've been successful in requesting Business seats on QF9 - be flexible and only request on flights with lots of cheap Business tickets for sale.
Note that availability is different from MEL and PER, so sometimes you can get an award from MEL, but not from PER on the same flight.

We did a QFF reward booking on Emirates flying to Manchester (as we were headed north) and there was a huge amount of availability. Emirates has 2 A380s per day flying to Manchester (!) and the flight was only about 60% full. 15 minutes from plane to Emirates chauffeur. Highly recommend it as a way of avoiding London. Also Emirates has announced new 777 route to Stansted so lots of options for reward bookings.
