check in on different itinerary. I have a domestic American flight into LAX (i could choose a flight that arrives 80mins before the Qantas departure to Brisbane). Do you think AA would check my bag straight through?

Based on my past experience, they won't do it. Worth a try nonetheless.

80min connection at LAX on two different bookings is extremely tight. I believe the QF counter closes 60min prior departure leaving you with only 20min to run from T3/4 to TBIT. Don’t forget u need to collect ur luggage first. The slightest AA delay will cause u lots of trouble. I would recommend at least 3h connection time. Good luck

Curious; we flew Memphis to DFW to San Francisco on AA, but sat on the DFW tarmac for 1 hour due to ‘ smoke’ over San F. We had anticipated a minimum of one and a half hour break before our QF flight back to Melbourne. As we landed belatedly in SF in the domestic terminal our QF flight was announced as boarding in the international terminal. Won’t bore you with the details of our sprint across the terminals, but friendly QF ground staff stated that they “ were waiting “. Change over of less than half an hour and feared that luggage would be left behind, but it arrived in Melbourne at the same time as us. Sometimes the system ( or cooperation between AA and QF) really works!

Sounds like it was all under one booking (if luggage was forwarded to your QF flight) in which case it is not unusual that connecting flight is aware of transferring delayed pax and IRROPS (especially if they are more than a few).
Transferring on two different bookings is a different story as you need to collect luggage and then recheck! International check in counters close typically 60min prior departure
