Qantas and Jetstar axes paper boarding passes

According to news, Qantas and Jetstar is going to ditch paper boarding passes to go digital.
I wonder, how about those passengers who do not have access to a smart phone, or having no network access to digital boarding pass due to being in a transit?
And how about those connecting to other carriers in one ticket where the first leg is operated by Qantas?
Also, without paper boarding pass, how can one able to use Business/First Class priority lane at airports where boarding pass is essential?
Perhaps we should have a petition demanding Qantas and Jetstar to immediately backtrack this decision and restore paper boarding pass.

I think its more they have given the option to go digital?
I cant see them axing paper boarding passes completely

They’ll encourage people to use digital boarding passes where possible. They’re not axing paper boarding passes

Exactly, and there are still a few people without smart phones, or people based abroad etc who dont have the app

With the current amount of fumbling with phones, an entirely digital boarding process could extend into a long time! How often has someone in front of you 'lost' the boarding pass as the phone went dark while they waited... precipitating waking up the phone, getting their fingerprint in the right place while juggling bags, then scrolling and faffing.

I'm not sure how workable getting rid of paper boarding passes is. Firstly there would be a sizable amount of people who'd either have their phone battery dead, not installed the qantas app and other issues.

I'd I'm not sure that the environmental impact would be great as firstly the passes are already paper which can be recycled or decompose.

If they wanted to do something for the environment, they could replace the plastic cutlery with metal as it would last much longer then the plastic.

I've got a feeling that they won't be getting rid of the paper, they will just be transitioning to paper receipts (like what they use for the qtags luggage)

They will still have to have paper for different occaions, children unaccompanied, prisoners under transit, those sorts of things and also times when the scanners etc simply don’t work, we have all stood there before whilst the scanner just doesn’t work and they have to hand out boarding passes, also late seat changes at the gate, you are always given a boarding pass for that.

Seems to me that boarding time increases for every passenger not using a paper boarding pass. Boarding (or at least getting through the gate) was much faster when everyone used the magnetic strip boarding passes.

It's interesting that the news headlines reflect just this one thing, as the announcement was about a reduction in waste... This includes boarding passes, but also single use plastics, removing physical frequent flyer cards, composting food waste etc etc.

I'm sure there will be some alternative to digital for those pax who can't use a phone.

Agreed that boarding process for digital needs work though.

No need for panic or petitions. Qantas intend "removing unnecessary paper, such as boarding passes and operational manuals, by going digital". The key word being "unnecessary", so if a boarding pass is necessary for whatever reason then you'll still get one.
