Qantas 737 to Perth

Bit of a rant while I’m sitting here on a packed and delayed flight waiting to depart. Why do Qantas insist on using planes without seat back entertainment or WIFI on flights from MEL and SYD to Perth, it’s bad enough we’re all crammed into the tiny seats of a 737, but trans continental flights should surely get entertainment.

Fleet flexibility - only half the flight has IFE, and they try and reserve it for shorthaul Asian and the NZ flights.

But always BYO on a 737 just in case.

It wasn't that long ago you weren't guaranteed Personal IFE domestically (EBJ on the A330 was a pain for this).

I prefer the BYO option now compared to the communal screen option of ~10 years ago.

Does anyone know how many 737’s have IFE?

From my knowledge anywhere from a quarter to 40% of their fleet. Definitely in the minority rather than the majority.

If I had to fly that route, nowadays with less QF A330 on that route, I would buy the seat next to me as well as my own, to be able to stretch the hands and also to man spread the legs on the B737.

With what is basically a two-airline market, QF only need to try to equal or slightly exceed the competition. With VA we only have BYO, so for you to have a chance of supplied IFE is a bonus :)

Once all the NZ registered aircraft are reflagged (think 3 left in ZK registration now) it will be 37 with Seatback IFE. 38 with BYO.

What routes do the 737’s with IFE mainly fly? I have had them to ASP, NzZ, and PER .

Domestically it is a lottery as the 737's will fly where they are needed. Internationally you are effectively guaranteed an IFE 737.
