Qantas fare over double AA on same flights

We just booked a return trip to NZ from LA on American in December. Being a loyal Qantas customer I tried to book on a QF code but it was over double the cost when booked direct with American. Same flights, same seats, same days. I’d rather not share the actual numbers but I can say my wife and I both stopped and stared at the screen with jaws dropped when we saw the Qantas ask.

It’s not as if the flights are full, business was maybe 30% booked at this stage. All I can say is wow.

It’s often the same with EK/QF. The QF8xxx’s are mostly 25-40% higher than the same EK flight in F. We’ve flown QF metal to Singapore on an EK flight number that was significantly cheaper than the same seat on a QF ticket.

You do miss out on the chauffeur drive that way, but I still got the call from the lounge the day before to book spa treatments etc.

Oh well ... I’m as loyal to an airline as they are to me!

Very true, hence the 25-40% premium for the identical service. To me, making P1 is certainly not worth about $20k per annum (not even close)

As a follow up to this, does anyone know if you get QF SCs if you book QF but fly AA? With work paying, made the effort to book QF all the way through, but SCs seem to have reverted to AA earn rates, or, in one instance, it's not either! Any guidance appreciated.

Yeah, if you fly an AA flight number on AA metal it reverts to the partner earn rate. Earn rates on routes that don’t have a QF tag service appear to be much higher than routes that do.

It depends on the sector. As LA to NZ is not a priority QF sector with few QF passengers and most of these with business accounts then there is little need to match fares while AA is competing with ANZ on the same sector so will match them. That is not a sector that QF will actively compete with ANZ as they are not flying their metal and maybe pay AA the AA rate so QF makes some money on the deal

Fair comment but from a marketing perspective seems to me this type of thing does more harm than good. All it does is say “we’re super expensive” or “we charge extra for nothing more”. Even AA doesn’t match ANZ on price and that’s fine, we can live with that because the product is different.

If you are using a seat map to decipher load, it isn't accurate so you can't really say that the flight is only 30% booked.

There are legalities about pricing on codeshares, hence why there isn't any correlation between what QF charge and EK, AA etc charge on the same flight.
