Qantas or Virgin Australia business class?

Which has the better business class offerings?  I will be flying monthly (domestic business, PER > BNE) in 2018 and it's time to accrue status with one or the other.  Will fly internationally on occasion but not as much.  PER > BNE on QANTAS is $2000-$2200 and on VIRGIN $999-$1399.  Why the price difference?  I haven't flown VA business class before, and have done a few QF business class flights.  Help!  Common sense says pay the lower fare (I'm the Director of a company so I'm paying) but I'm suspicious by the extreme difference in prices.  So all you regular flyers... which gives better service, QF or VA?  I'm particularly interested in 1. food, 2. seats, 3. in flight service.  Thanks for any pro tips.

I have never flown Virgin J (i did in economy last year and the product for Virgin walking past looked great) but live on Qantas and other Oneworld carrier planes (21 weeks of travel a year). I am loyal to the red roo but their product except for the revamped A330 suites is redundant and not ahead of the game. I hear great things about the Virgin product, young, modern and fresh.

I would assume the price difference comes down to a few factors:

  1. Virgin are not part of an alliance so don't have that to leverage off
  2. Chasing customers (those who fly J and above typically fly more than other tiers such as silver and below)
  3. Operational costs? Could these be lower?
  4. Cabin simply isn't full

Perhaps give Virgin a go and decide for yourself! I should really try it myself.

more demand for qantas seats is the reason for the price difference.
Status is worth a lot more on qantas especially platinum and qantas business passengers don't share a lounge with low tiers FF's and paid accesser's

On the Perth to East  Coast widebodies, the two are VERY comparable in product and service, with Virgin being my preference. Make sure they are widebodies though - I don't think VA operates an A330 to Brisbane, in which case a Qantas A330 vs Virgin 737 is a definite win for Qantas.

When it comes to the A330 product, I'd take either but when it comes to their 737s, it depends.

I am very tall (6'8") and QF legroom is worse than VA in J. I would say there is about 3" inches less space.

For coast to coast through, I understand that most of VAs A330 are going to flying to Asia, then it's no comparison (currently).

For me, QF product isn't good enough to justify the extra cost. Having said that, often they both have Pre-book specials that reduces the cost differential. You probably know the board calendar well in advance, so can book 6-9 months worth at half price.

I thought VA was aligned with Air NZ, SQ, Air Canada etc?  Can I use status/points with them?

You can't use Velocity points to book Air Canada flights just yet.
