Qantas Frequent Flyer soft landing to Gold status Hot Topic

By Tony_young | Mar 05, 2017, 09:51 AM
Hi,
I have been flying regularly for 6 years or so now and have always easily got past the 600 point level for gold, and missed out by about 100 points getting to platinum one year (5900 lifetime credits)
I have had a gap for about 6 months, so with my 30 April anniversary date coming up, I'm only on 520 points.

I was hoping to get to 555 at which point I could get a 50 point credit as a loyalty bonus; but I'm not going to make it at this stage.

Is there reasonable chance I will get a soft landing and roll the GOLD status over for another year?

I have booked an family vacation to Europe for June with QF and we use the extra baggage allowance to carry a bike; so it is a real pain if I lose my status..

cheers
Tony

I think this is when buying the cheapest return flight (10 SC each way) during the double status credits promotion (giving a total 40 SC) is worth it to maintain your Gold FF. That will get you to 560 SC, and with your 50 point credit will get you over 600. Need to be quick to book by 6 Mar and fly before your 30 Apr SC annivesary.

I think what you are asking for is a complimentary extension of Gold for another year, rather than a soft landing.

There is a chance that this will happen, and it does happen, but there are no guarantees - keep an eye on your account.

Several years ago when I travelled a lot for work and had been Platinum for several years I faced a similar dilemma with a potential down grade from that level to QF Gold. I had already secured lifetime Gold Status. Just prior to my annual review, and with a new booking in place, I phoned QF and negotiated an extension. The operator had to refer my case to his boss, but I was granted the one years extension. It was an act I appreciated.

QF often looks at a three-year average - so if you have more than 1800 SCs over the past three years, you'll probably be OK. But no guarantee - the only way you can be 100% sure is to earn the SCs.

I ended up booking a couple of QantasLink flights which should get me across the line.
I am assuming the qualify for the double sc?
I looked everywhere for definitive confirmation of this, without any luck.

Last year I needed to complete one flight late in my membership year to retain platinum. I was booked LA-Mel return so was going to be fine but my renewal actually came through before I travelled. Pleasant surprise.

Double status credits should be fine as long as you registered for it before you booked.

@tony,

"I have had a gap for about 6 months, so with my 30 April anniversary date coming up, I'm only on 520 points."

At 520 status credits, you should be receiving the 50 Bonus Status credits (or 8,000) points, once you earned 500 under the terms of the QFF Loyalty Bonus. You shouldn't need to get to 555 to make this trigger or happen.

I would be on the phone to QFF to see why this hasn't been awarded first. Mind you, the Loyalty Bonus can take Qantas time to process, for some reason.
