Missing space and lower case in spelling of name - different in passport

By Soon | Jul 03, 2019, 11:39 AM
Good morning all

Need a clarification please to anyone who knows please?

I made a redemption booking from Qantas on Qatar this morning.
Somehow, while i input the exact names as per our passports, the spelling of our names are slightly different in resulting itinerary.

For example - my name in passport is 'Ching Xing Tan' but appeared on Qatar's itinerary as 'Chingxing Tan'.
My travelling partner's name in passport is 'Jeremy John Roberts' but appeared on Qatar's itinerary as 'Jeremy john Roberts'.

I will call Qatar to clarify if the traveling names are okay; but do any of you out there travel internationally and has encountered issues of a similar nature?

And can confirm (importantly) that the spelling of names in different cases and missing spaces is not a problem?

Through web-chat, Qantas stated that it is okay but we would like to make sure it is so.

Many thanks all

I've also had this problem making a QF redemption booking but for JAL. Having previously flown JAL they specifically said before that they required it to match exactly as on the passport. QF had the same half arsed response as you said above but I didn't trust them, so I ended up cancelling the redemption (didn't have to pay the cancellation fee as I told them it was their shit booking system that caused the problem) and just bought the ticket directly from JAL.

Well whilst not being able to provide a definitive answer, what I can say is that having travelled very extensively over the last decade, rarely have my ticket and passport matched exactly. And it’s never caused me a problem. Reason being is that I have an apostrophe in my surname and for the majority of sites you have to enter letters only. No other characters. Sometimes as a result the first and second letters of my surname are seperated - giving me a new middle initial!! As I say I’ve never had an issue (appreciate I’ve now given myself the Kiss of Death) the worse that’s happened is a couple of times a check in agent has commented on it. Never even been close to it causing a problem and I’ve visited over 50 countries and probably flown every major airline there is.

HI Ourmanin, your reply is a definitive relief to me, thank you.
Any folks out there with experience would love your comments.
Appreciate it

I'm in a similar boat with a hyphen in my surname. Many booking sites won't accept anything other than letter so my surname is either spelt with a space between both parts or put together as one long word.

It's caused a couple of headaches in the past in terms of getting FF membership details attached to the booking (membership number and surname didn't reconcile), but these days the systems tend to have picked up on the issue as I haven't had an issue lately. I've never had any issue with check-in, passport controls etc.

I've worked at airports for the last 12 years. I've worked directly for 3 different airlines (at different ports) and as a contractor for an additional 28 airlines. All of the airlines I've worked for would accept those bookings without issue.

I had the same thing booking a Emirates flight through Qantas. My Qantas profile has my middle name, but the Emirates system combined first and middle name together. I didn't have any problems with Emirates check-in.

It's perfectly normal for travel agents to combine my given names into "Firstnamemiddlename", and it can appear that way even on my boarding passes. It's fine.

Over the last couple of weeks have flown China Airlines, EVA and Singapore and all bookings defaulted to my first and middle name joined as one. Had no problems.

Most airlines don’t care about middle names. This is related to the old booking system that doesn’t allow special characters other than letters. Therefore, most airliners will allow you to check in as long as the first and last name matches.

Hi OP. From my experience, you wont have any problems. My name has a hyphen in it, and depending on the system used by each airline carrier and the ticketing machines, sometimes they will replace the hyphen with a space, or just remove the hyphen completely. Lowercase vs uppercase is not relevant whatsoever.
