Booking with S7 Airlines website

I'm planning to book a couple of business class tickets from Sydney to Vladivostok later this year. Searches have thrown up well-priced and well-timed options with CX and S7 via HKG. The cheapest advertised fare is available from the S7 Airlines website with payment in rubles. Has anyone had any experience booking directly with S7's website? Slightly concerned about lack of consumer protection if they cancel close to the time of travel...

It's the official airline website so it's the best you could do in terms of booking options. Changes should be easy and cancellations simple since you've booked directly with he airline. Regardless, in the event of a flight cancellation they would rebook you or provide alternative options.

If paying by credit card, you maybe on the hook for international conversion fees since you are paying rubles.

Just 2 weeks ago I flew S7 J class from Hong Kong to Irkutsk. Booked via the website and as you say the price was reasonable. Everything confirmed and upon check-in all was good. Link to my Qantas FF was hassle free and even got my status credits and points within a week of flying. No dramas at all. In the days leading up to travel I did get some emails from S7 that were in Russian and didn't seem to have an option to read in English. A bit worried at first but the Google translate confirmed they were just marketing emails.

S7 is in Oneworld, which enforce a certain set of standards; so I highly doubt they would be cancelling passengers itineraries for no good reason (although something like grounding of 737 Max 8 fleet across the world could potentially affect any airline).

In general S7 has a reasonably good reputation, so I would not be more concerned about it than any other airline.

Just be aware that 'Business Basic' airfares don't normally include lounge access (but access is fine if you have frequent flyer status etc).

Could be different on international journeys, although at least on Russian domestic flights I know that to be the case.

Obviously, you'd have many Oneworld lounges to choose from in Hong Kong, although S7 uses Hong Kong Airlines' Club Autus lounge as a contract space (the same lounge used by Virgin Australia prior to flights to Australia), so if lounge access is included with the ticket, you'd have that option too.
