Why don't airports have fitness centres?

I am keen to get your views on why airports and lounges don’t have pay per use fitness centres or gyms? Surely I am not the unique one with this idea and would be a hit with travellers

I often wondered if it is because people are not so willing to put sweaty clothes into their bags and then fly around the world with the sweaty clothes trapped in their bag or have the time. I guess you can get the clothes laundered at your destination immediately.

As a Velocity Platinum, one of my favourite strategies is to use the gym in the Etihad First Lounge for yoga. It is absolutely brilliant and leaves you feeling totally refreshed before the next flight.

Last week i was flying Cathay Melbourne to New York and had a 6 hour gap between flights. I went into HK and used a gym there to smash a workout and get me nice a tired, back to the airport, shower at the pier then feel asleep as soon as i boarded. I reckon it helped alot with getting me onto new york time.

I would imagine costs would be the main issue, floor space, showers etc, very costly, terminal space is very expensive and in high demand.

Whilst not a gym, there is a swimming pool at Changi that can be used in transit. Never done so myself (that or a glass or two of champagne is not a difficult choice for me) but I’ve heard it’s ok.

Most Airlines don't need a gym. They always seem to make your departure air bridge as far away from check in as possible.

By the time you walk that long distance you probably would burn the same energy as a workout!!! Or so it seems.

I can't recall a flight over the past few years where I did not have to walk a hell of a long way from check in so that surely must be the cunning strategy of Airlines to keep you fit and save them money by not having a Gym.!!!
