Best luxury hotels in Brisbane

By djtech | Oct 28, 2018, 10:35 AM
Hi all,

My parents (in their 60s) are visiting Brisbane next year and I need to book a hotel. I'm looking for a luxury 5-star hotel, bonus points for river view or being apart of the Marriott/SPG program. Considering the westin and w though maybe w is a bit too 'young'. Happy to take other suggestions and your thoughts.

Marriot is close to river, a bit of a walk to cbd shops though.

Stamford does have the benefit of being right at the river end and access to botanical garden.

Hilton is bang middle of city and if you get the right room you may get some river view from between the buildings.

Brisbane in my opinion is not the luxury hotel market as you see in Sydney or Melbourne..

Westin is brand new

I haven't tried it but looks good and I dont think too young.

the westin will be brand spanking new and likely have teething problems like anything else.

The W is nice and perfectly located with excellent river views. My parents, also in their 60s, stayed there and in a lot of their other properties. It's a fairly nice hotel with a quirky coat of paint. It's not like you walk in to find a pile of naked millennials having sex and taking MDMA in the lobby. I'm pretty sure they can handle it.

Frankly, it's a refreshing change for the Australian hotel market.

The new Emporium Hotel in Southbank is great, excellent views of the city and kangaroo point from the terrace bar on the top floor.

Brisbane's had a number of five stars hotel either open recently or will be opening soon.
I'd try the W or the Westin.

I would stay at Meriton Suites, best views from the higher levels

What are their plans in Brisbane and do they mind walking? If they need access to public transport but also don't mind a walk I'd go with the Marriott. It's on the river (provided they get a river view room), close to buses and a 10 minute walk to the Queen Street Mall or Eagle Street Pier (for restaurants). The W is also on the river, closer to QSM but I've not heard anything great about it (ok rooms, poor service, average food in restaurants). The Westin hasn't opened yet, only some of the very top floors may have a river view but it will be luxurious. The Hilton is best for location. Stamford Plaza is old and has not aged gracefully. Sofitel is nice but no view. There's certainly a lot to choose from here.

Plus the Valley now has some 4.5-5* choices.
The brand new Calile is the pick -- i'd go for the poolside room king or city view king.
FV at Peppers is also gr8 -- try and get the higher floor 1 bed facing south in the nose of the gold Flatiron building.

The Marriott by far. Emporium is very funky/trendy but the rooms a little too serviced apartment in style and feel. It is in a nice little precinct with some shops cafes etc. They will def need a taxi to get into the CBD from Emporium. Barack Obama stayed at the Marriott if that has an impact on your decision. Marriott has the most refined service too. Make sure you get them a high floor, river view and a club room if budget allows. They will need a taxi to heart of the city, otherwise its a 20 minute walk at an average pace. They can walk along side the river which makes the walk much nicer. Westin I have no idea.

The new Emporium at Southbank is hands down the best in Brisbane. Great location with plenty of dinning options around Southbank. An easy ferry or train ride into the city or 5 minute cab. Views from the rooms are amazing with a rooftop pool and bar area. Not SPG but worth the experience.

Staying at the Westin on its opening night next week... will report back. Otherwise the new Emporium is fantastic, the W, The Calile, Ovolo Inchcolm and Art Series Johnson are all excellent choices. Those who say brisbane is lacking in the hotel scene must be basing this on a lack of Park Hyatt’s or something
