Shanghai Layover

By laspod0 | Mar 21, 2018, 06:41 PM

My wife and I have a 36hr layover in Shanghai on our way back to Sydney courtesy of QF Classic Rewards booking.

LHR- PVG BA in J then PVG- SYD MU in J. I’m interest in anyone’s experiences with an early morning arrival into PVG, where to stay and what to do for a short, but decent stopover?

My research says no visa required for 36hr layover given this route, can anyone confirm please?

Go to the French Quarter and sample some great eateries and then to the Bund which is the walk along the harbour. If the budget allows the Park Hyatt is amazing with view to match and dead bang in the heart of the commercial district with nice shops/malls. Its quite safe to walk around.

Agree the Bund and the French Quarter and stay at a Hotel near the Bund as the views are great.

Agree that it's worth staying within walking distance of the Bund. We found a Shanghai city tour worthwhile, too. A cruise on the river in the evening is a great way to see the spectacular light shows on building facades.

All the above, sample the local cuisine. 72-hour visa free transit if you are travelling to an onward 3rd country. There will be a separate line for this once you get to immigration, so don't line up at the regular lines or you'll be annoyed!

Yes, flying LHR-PVG-SYD allows up to 144 hours visa free "transit" (provided the MU flight does not stop somewhere else in China on the way to SYD).

I've been to Shanghai twice, both times using the TWOV.
Last time, I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott near the Century Avenue subway station. (On the Pudong side of the river, near the financial district.)
The time before I was at the Swissotel Grand near Jing An Park.
Both hotels accepted early check in, though the time I was at the Swissotel, I had lost a day due to a BA caused misconnect in DXB, so they had been expecting me the night before I arrived.
